Introduction Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a framework that defines the steps involved in the development of software at each phase. There are six phases in every Software development life cycle model. System planning and investigation are the first phase of SDLC. 3
System Planning During the system planning phase, the objective of the project is determined and the requirements of the system are considered. Meeting with managers or stake holders are held to determine the exact requirements of the project. An estimate of resources, such as personnel and costs, is prepared, to either bring changes in the current system or develop a new system. 4
Investigation A user's request to change, improve, or enhance an existing system. The initial investigation is one way of handling this. The objective is to determine whether the request is valid or feasible. 5
User’s request form to be filled by user: Title of work Nature of work. Date submission of request Date of completion . Job Objectives . Expected Benefits . I/O description. Signature of requester . Signature of approving authority. 6
Investigation's Steps Identifications of Needs It is concerned with what the user needs rather than what he/she wants. Determining the User’s Information Requirements It is difficult to determine user requirements. Because system requirements change and user requirements must be modified. Strategies for Determining Information Requirements By simply asking the user's about their requirements Getting Information from the existing information system Data Analysis Decision Analysis 7
Problem Definition and Project Initiation The problem must be stated clearly, understood, and agreed upon by the user and the analyst. Background Analysis Once the project is initiated, the analyst begins to learn about the setting, the existing system, and the physical processes related to the revised system. Fact Finding After obtaining the background knowledge, the analyst begins to collect data on the existing system’s outputs, inputs and costs. Tools are: Review of written documents, On site Observations, Interviews and questionnaires. 8
Fact Analysis Identify all the collecting data used by the system data requirements and draw an ER model if appropriate. Determination of feasibility Specification of the good and bad features of the current system . 9
