1 Systematic Literature Review 1.1 Introduction The general term for all attempts to synthesize the results and conclusions of two or more publications on a given topic. Depending on the method used to collect the data (publications) and how the data were synthesized, there are 3 main types of literature reviews ( Pati D, Lorusso LN,2018): Narrative review (Basic Science - Mechanisms). Systematic review (Clinical Science). Meta-analysis review (Clinical Science). 5/19/2024 2
…Cont A literature review could be seen in multiple products as a: Section in an article in a peer-reviewed journal, Chapter for a thesis / dissertation, Assignment or term paper for a course, Research review article. Grant and Booth (2009) proposed classification of the main review types; Table 1.0: Main Review Types.pdf 5/19/2024 3
…Cont 1.2 What Is a Systematic Review? A systematic review is a review of the evidence on a clearly formulated question that uses systematic and explicit methods. Identify, select and critically appraise relevant primary research. Extract and analyze data from the studies that are included in the reviews. Systematic reviews are most often used to study the effectiveness of a particular drug treatment. Researchers also use this technique in economic evaluation, diagnostics tests accuracy, prevalence/incidence etc. 5/19/2024 4
…Cont 1.3 Why Do We Need a Systematic Review? Systematic reviews are needed for the following reasons; To keep abreast of all previous and new research, To introduce a new treatment that is expected better than an existing one, To discontinue an old treatment which might be out dated, harmful or less cost effective, To draft guidelines for health and social interventions or treatment management, To arrive at a consensus where conflicting evidence is reported. 5/19/2024 5

Risk of Bias 8. Sensitivity Analysis 9. Conclusion 10. References 11. Acknowledgement 12. Appendices 13. Contribution of Authors 14. Declaration of interest
…Cont 1.6 Narrative Review VS Systematic Review In comparison with literature or traditional narrative reviews, systematic reviews are much time-intensive and need a research team with multiple skills and contributions. The description of the differences are presented in the table below. Table 1.1: Differences between a Narrative Review and Systematic Review.pdf 5/19/2024 8
