T20 Cricket World Cup Winners List Year-wise
T20 Cricket World Cup Winners List
The idea of T20 Cricket was first proposed in England by Stuart Robertson, the
marketing manager of the ECB as they were trying to find out a fast-paced version of the
boring (As termed by the younger generation of the nation) Test cricket to pull the crowd
to the cricket stadium.

His Idea was voted the winner by county chairmen with a result of 11-7 in his favour. The
younger generation responded positively to his idea even it did not take much time to win
the hearts of the people outside ECB as well. The Caribbean were the first to join the
party. By seeing this hugely increasing hype International Cricket Council (ICC) decided
to have a World cup starting from 2007 in every two years except any ICC 50 Over World
cup don’t fall at that year. Here is the ICC T20 World Cup Winners List:

In the first edition, ICC t20 world cup winners twelve teams had participated. South Africa
was chosen to host the 2007 T20 world cup which was the first of its kind. Arch-rivals
India and Pakistan met in the final at Johannesburg on 24th September 2007 where India
became the ICC t20 world cup winner of the inaugural edition by beating Pakistan by only
5 runs.
It was a thoroughly intense match where baton shifted to one team to another. India
scored a decent 157 runs thanks to Gautam Gambhir who scored 75 of 54 and a late
cameo of Rohit Sharma who scored 30 of 16. Umar Gul was the most successful among
the Pakistani Bowlers who took 3 wickets and gave away 28 runs. Pakistan started off
well courtesy Imran Nazir who scored 33 from 14 but soon lost the plot, Irfan Pathan
became the saviour for India.
Misbah Ul Haq stood tall but failed to take the game away and fall short for five runs.
Irfan Pathan was declared man of the match for his splendid performance with the ball,
whose figure was 4-0-16-3. Shahid Afridi became the man of the series suppressing
Mathew Hayden who scored the highest run-scorer with 265 runs. Afridi had 12 wickets
and 91 runs with 45 balls he faced.

In the second edition of ICC t20 world cup, Pakistan won this tournament, which was
held in 2009 in England where Sri Lanka and Pakistan met in the final on 21st June by
beating West Indies and South Africa respectively. It was largely a low scoring affair in
London where Srilanka was able to score 138 for 6 only thanks to Kumar Sangakara and
Mathews. Abdul Razzaq took 3 wickets.
In reply Pakistan started with ease, Kamran Akmal kept the scoreboard ticking and Afridi
Finished the game with a blistering inning of 54 from 40. Pakistan completed the
tournament by a comfortable 8 wickets victory over Sri Lanka. Shahid Afridi declared
man of the match for his fine show both with bat and bowl in the final. There was some
consolation for Sri Lanka as well As Tillakaratne Dilshan was adjudged Man of the series
being the highest run-scorer with 317 runs. Umar Gul was once again, the highest

Calypso-The Caribbean’s. The venue for the final was Bridge Town. Australia being the
favourite of the tournament will be facing an unlikely opponent in England. Australia
started off very badly and once they were 3 down for 8.
But thanks to David Hussey and Cameron White they were able to reach to 147 for 6 in
their scheduled 20 overs. England managed to get the victory very easily thanks to Craig
Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen. Kieswetter was awarded man of the match and Peterson

# West Indies (2012)
Sri Lanka was determined to clinch the title this time in their home soil as they are up
with West Indies in the final for the 2012 edition. Sri Lanka was boosted with the
presence of their mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis. West Indies started the proceedings
in a low slow pitch and ended up with a fighting total of 136 largely because of the
precious 78 of Samuels. Captain Darren Sammy scored a handy 26 in the slog which
proved very vital for his team.
Though Dilshan departed early Sanga and Mahela build a good partnership But Narine
made it sure that Sri Lanka does not score too many in the middle. Sammy chipped in
with 2 wickets and West Indies got their first T20 trophy with a win for 36 runs over
mighty Lanka. Shane Watson was adjudged the man of the series for his 249 runs and
11 wickets. And Marlon Samuels got the man of the match award. Sri Lanka’s Ajantha
Mendis got the highest wicket with fifteen against his name.
# Sri Lanka (2014)
India started as the hot favourite for the 2014 edition which took place in Bangladesh,
with all comfortable wins they were rising high before the final. They met the old rivals’
Sri Lanka in the final in Sher E Bangla Stadium, Mirpur. And to everyone’s surprise apart
from Virat Kohli, every other player failed to accelerate, and India finished with only 130
for 4 in their full quota Sri Lanka chased it down with ease losing only 4 wickets.
Lankans finally got their prize after failing it previously and become the ICC t20 world
cup winners this year. Sangakkara got the man of the match in the final while Virat not
only got the man of the series but also was the highest run-getter. Imran Tahir took the
highest wicket in the tournament.

off stokes while needing 19 from last over and West Indies became the first-ever team to
lift the cup for the second time. To Sub continent’s joy, Virat Kohli was the man of the
