THE CLIMATE. に |

+ The 18188 has interesting weather throughout the Seasons. In
the winter the Taiga is covered in a heavy blanket of Snow
with frozen lakes and Subzero temperatures for 6-7 months.
When Snow falls it can stay on the ground for 6 months. Trees
block Snow from blowing away. In the Spring the geese and

water flow Start to return, animals go to the marshes and

lakes, and ice starts to melt. Summer is a heat wave that
lasts)3-4 months. In fall water, Spongy moSS, and oozing nue

PRECIPITATION

+ Precipitation occurs in two forms in the Ann Pen Treat

taiga. During the winter precipitation "

falls in the form of Snow annually about
20-40 incheS(50.8-101.6cm) .

+ Rainfall usually occurs in the Taiga's
moist Summer having an average annual
rainfall of 10-20 inches (25.4-50.8cm). Bin

+ This means that the average precipitation in
the Taiga is annually about 40 inches(1016cm).

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

Animals need to Survive in the Taiga. Their
adaptations help them Stay warm, hide, and
defend themSelves. In the harsh winter
months, many animals have thick coats to”
keep them warm. "WE

て で

- the Siberian Tiger has a thick
coat, long legs, and large paws.
Its long legs help the tiger to
walk through deep Snow. Its
large paws act like SnowShoes.

GRIZZLY BEAR

・ The grizzly bear eats lots of
food to gain fat that helps to
keep it warm. Then it Sleeps
through the winter. It isn’t
actually hibernation, it is just
a deep Sleep.

+ Some animals in the Taiga have
adaptations for defense. The
porcupine has quills that it
uses to keep predators at bay.
If a predator tries to kill the
porcupine anyway, it will get
the quills stuck in its body.

G@erez ンダ も

・ Some animals have
adaptations that camouflage
them. Animals like the
SnowShoe hare turn brown in
the Summer and turn white
in the winter.

The common conifers are;
* EvergreenS Pine
e Fir - Tamarack

* Spruce * Deciduous tree

+ The Black Spruce is a tall
tree. It can grow to be
twenty-five meters tall.

+ The Black Spruce enjoyS
colder climates in the
northern part of the world. It
is all over the taiga forest.

in the colder climates because of
its layered twigs, waxy pine
needles, and rough bark. These
Survival skills protect the Black
Spruce from the cold and
predators. AlSo from forest fires.

+ You can find the BalSam Fir in

northeastern North America,

from Virginia to Newfoundland

and northwest towards Yukon
and Labrador.

- it is a Small to medium Sized native
evergreen tree. It can grow to be 40 (©
to 80 feet tall. The Balsam fir has a !
Wide baSe and a narrow top that
ends in a Slender, Spirelike top.

Dn |
O 을

- The Balsam fir is a late
SucceSSional, or climax growth tree.
This means that they grow in old,
undisturbed forests. The Balsam fir
is the least fire resistant of
evergreen in North America, and its
Seeds are deStroyed by fire. Balsam
firs first appear 30 to 50 years
after a fire.

JACKE PINE

+ The Jack pine usually grows to be twenty-
Seven meters tall and sixteen and thirty-
two centimeter diameter around the trunk.
AS it grows it gets rounder and rounder
around the crown area.

+ The Seeds are uSually four to five
millimeters long and are dark brown. The
Jack Pine gives most animals their
nurturance. The tree gives its nurturance
to mostly rodents.

@rerezi

- The jack pine adapts to flat or hilly areas that have
Sandy Soil.

・ It is possible for the jack pine to grow in the
taiga becauSe of its waxy pine needles and

rough bark.

+ it is good to have waxy pine needles and rough
bark in the taiga because the wax on the pine
needles protects the needles and So does the

rough bark.

from the weather in the taiga, which

is uSually cold. ;

TAMABACE TREE

- is a member of the pine family. It
uSually attains a height of between 30
and 50 feet high but in favorable
Conditions can reach a height of 90

ㆍ The tree flowers in March and April. It has
very Small cones less than an inch long and
light chestnut brown. They remain on the
tree throughout the winter when the Seeds
are dropped.

Summary

The taiga is a biome located in the high latitudes
of North America, Europe, and ASia. The taiga has
long, Cold winters and Short, cool Summers.
Vegetation consists primarily of coniferous
trees and Some deciduous trees. There are many
animals adapted to live in the taiga, including
deer, bear, as well as insects and birds.
