Ingredients of a Talcum Powder Arpit B.Sc. Life Sciences

Talcum Powder is the most commonly used toilet powder preparations. Talcum Powder, As the name implies, it consists mainly of Talc, also mixed with other ingredients. Ingredients in the Talcum Powder- Talc. CaCO ₃ and MgCO ₃ Zinc Stearate. Zinc Oxide. Kaolin. Silica. Starch. Boric Acid. Perfume(Optional)

Role of Each Ingredients Talc, which is the main component, is composed of hydrated magnesium silicate i.e, Mg 3 Si 4 O 10 (OH) 2 It is a soft, versatile mineral which can be used in cosmetic formulations for its moisture absorption and as a filler. It gives a smooth appearance to the skin and other ingredeints added along with talc help in imparting a compostition perfect for skin application.

CaCo 3 or MgCO 3 added in the formulation act as drying agents and pH adjusters. Other ingredients like Zinc Stearate and Zinc Oxide help in imparting water repellant, astringent and anti bacterial properties to the talcum powder formulations. Kaolin and Zinc Stearate are known to increase the adhesiveness of the talcum powder formulation. Calamine powder is a milled form of Zinc Oxide.

Kaolin is a hydrated Aluminium silicate with absorbent properties . Kaolin, also being a high density compound is used in talcum powder formulations to adjust fluffiness. Kaolin and Zinc Stearate are known to increase the adhesiveness of the talcum powder formulation. The trio of Talc, Calamine and Kaolin is superb in their absorption powers.

Starch is added because of its good absorptive properties and a good covering power which helps in imparting smooth texture to the skin. Perfumes are added to enchance the market value and sales.
