In 1992 Shell announced to the oil industry that it had developed a novel water-based fluid for drilling shales. The fluid was named TAME - Thermally Activated Mud Emulsion. It contained a water-soluble alcohol alkoxylate that clouded out within the shale rock surrounding a drilled wellbore when activated by the temperature of the rock. The clouding process reduced pore pressure penetration within the shale and thereby maintained shale stability. The slides shown here are the originals used to support Shell's SPE paper 26699 presentation.
