Guidelines to Enhance Teamwork in Nursing Educational Institutions Have an optimal number of team members; ideally not exceeding 12. (e.g., Team for coordinating the students regarding co-curricular and extracurricular activities).
Take care to ensure that teams comprise members with at least three types of skill-technical/ academic skill, problem-solving and decision-making skills along with interpersonal skills. Encourage the teams to have specific goals and develop commitment toward realizing the goals. Have proper leadership and structure for teams. Leadership and structure provide clear focus and direction.
Do not allow members to hide inside a group, form “pseudo teams” and indulge in social loafing. Establish appropriate academic performance evaluation and suitable reward systems not only for the students but also for the faculty, based on performance appraisal. Ensure the team members develop high mutual trust. High performance teams are characterized by high mutual trust.
Create a sense of urgency in the first meeting. Set lucid and tangible rules of behavior. Challenge the team with new projects or problems to solve periodically.
