Technical Drafting

The Origins of Technical Drawing What is Technical Drawing? It is a drawing that visually expresses how something functions and is to be constructed. 2

Technical Drawings are made of GRAPHIC -communication using graphic elements. -These elements include symbols (glyphs and icons), images (drawings and photos.

Who uses Technical Drawing Engineers, contractors, plumbers, Architects, interventors and other use technical drawing to build the object detailed in the plan.

Origins From 1400 to 1600, technical drawing began emerging, thanks in large part to artist and architect Filippo Brunelleschi. 5

Origins H e began incorporating linear perspective in his paintings about 1425, which gave his successors the ability to depict mechanical devices for the first time in a realistic manner. He is also credited as the architect of the Cathedral of Florence, located in Italy

Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is considered to be one of the first graphic artists because of his ability to combine his scientific interest with his artistic ability art + science = design innovation 7

Raphael Sanzio 9 Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) perfected the technique of three-dimensional perspective while studying architecture. He was able to translate the two-dimensional image that the eye creates into the three-dimensional image that the brain interprets onto paper

Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution (1760-1850) was a period during which many technological advances were developed. 10

Industrial Revolution Industrial and agricultural advancements in machinery and automated tooling emerged at an incredible rate. 11

Industrial Revolution 12 This created an increased need for even more precise mechanical drawing. Designers needed to more accurately portray the working mechanical elements of increasingly complex systems of machinery.

Industrial Revolution 13 This is generally the period in which historians concede that graphic design was first invented.

Modern Technique 14 Though many industries may still rely on the occasional hand drawing, computer software is the primary medium used today. AutoCAD Revit SketchUp Inventor 3D Studio Max

T he benefit to using computer software The principal benefit of these programs is that an object, once drafted in the program, can be turned and rotated on any axis with the click of a mouse 15

This allows a single illustration to be viewed from numerous angles. 16
