Slide Content

This lesson aims to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and attitude on animal and fish raising as a very profitable and in-demand business in the country today. The knowledge that you will gain will serve as your weapon to combat poverty and will help open doors of opportunities. Cultivate this knowledge and you will soon join the successful animal and fish raisers in your community.

Kinds of four-legged animals HOG RAISING Hogs are commonly produced animals among animal growers. They can be raised in the backyard or in the vacant lot. Large scale piggeries should be constructed away from residential area considering the health hazard that these animals can cause to people.

Hog raising is in-demand business because Filipinos are heavy consumers of pork meat. In five to six months’ time, this animal can be sold live or as meat to consumers. Weanlings are sold for “lechon” purposes. The supply of pork meat during peak seasons like Christmas time, New year and fiesta celebration is high that is why massive production of hogs is necessary to meet the demand of supply.

Pigs need : Good housing feeding racks water troughs septic tank should be provided to pigs. Good source of water is also necessary since pigs’ house must be maintained and disinfected

2. GOAT RAISING Goats are also one of the most farmed animals among Filipinos because they are easy to raise, require a minimum investment, and multiply fast. Chevon or goat meat is rich source of protein and is just affordable by many. The production of chevon meat has increased because people opted to buy this kind of meat for it is low in calories, saturated fat, and has a unique taste and flavor.

Goats need : good housing, feeding racks, drinking troughs an open grassland.

3. CATTLE OR COW RAISING Cattle raising provides meat and dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt. Although they require big amount of capital investment because they are expensive animal, they have less maintenance requirement compared to hog raising since they just feed on grasses.

Beef is a popular meat among Filipinos and costs higher than the pork meat thus, cattle raising has a good return of investment to cattle growers if enough knowledge, skills and attitude are applied. Milk production is a popular and a very profitable business today. In fact, cow’s milk is used in school’s feeding program because of its high nutritive value.

Cows need: pasture land for feeding roaming and water troughs for drinking. They are resistant to diseases and fast-growing animals.

4. CARABAO RAISING The Carabao is known as our national animal of the country. It helps farmers in many ways that is why they are regarded as the best buddy of the farmers in the farm. They are not only raised for farming, but for meat consumption as well since the carabeef, (carabao’s meat) is a good quality meat with a market price higher than the cow’s meat.

This farm animal is an excellent producer of milk that is why carabao raisers are making profit out of it.

5. RABBIT RAISING Rabbitry is becoming a livelihood nowadays. Rabbits are raised for meat consumption and pets’ purposes. Rabbit meat which is rarely eaten can be a good alternative to pork and beef because of its quality meat. They are also resistant to diseases.
