KAREEM LOTFY Teflon (PTFE) In Operative Dentistry What’s it made From & What’s it good for ASSISTANT LECTURER OF OPERATIVE DENTSITY

CONTENT 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 WHAT’S IT MADE FROM FEATURES USES USES IN OPERATIVE DENTSITRY DID YOU KNOW FAQS REFERENCES

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a polymeric material that has common uses outside of dentistry. WHAT’S IT MADE FROM?? Polytetrafluoroethylene is a synthetic fluoropolymer made from the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) monomers

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION The chemical composition of PTFE thread consists of carbon and fluorine atoms. The repeating unit in the polymer chain is composed of carbon and fluorine atoms arranged in a linear fashion. The chemical formula for polytetrafluoroethylene is (C2F4)n, where "n" represents the number of repeating units in the polymer chain.

FEATURES

01 Which means it does not adhere to other surfaces. This allows the tape to be easily applied and removed without leaving residue NON STICK 02 03 04 PTFE is highly resistant to chemicals, including acids, bases, solvents, and oils. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE Can withstand a wide range of temperatures, making it suitable for both hot and cold-water systems. TEPERATURE RESISTANCE Due to its high melting point (over 300°C) to ensure that it is sterile before use AUTOCLAVABLE 05 HYDROPHOBIC Moisture Resistance

USES IN OPERATIVE DENTISTRY Isolation Matricing Restoration

ISOLATION

TEFLON Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper isolation around the rubber dam in case of isolation breach

TEFLON Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper isolation and Margin exposure in case of Deep Margin Elevation “DME”

TEFLON Teflon tape can be used In lieu of retraction cord

ISOLATION OF THE FIELD Teflon tape ensures that the proximal surfaces of the adjacent teeth are not etched and bonded; thus preventing iatrogenic bonding within the contact area.

ISOLATION OF THE FIELD

MATRICING

MATRICING Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper “Adaptation” Of matrix band to the cavity margins

MATRICING Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper “Adaptation” Of matrix band to the cavity margins

MATRICING Teflon tape can be used to ensure “Adaptation &sufficient space” in Back to Back restorations

MATRICING Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper “Adaptation” Of matrix band in case of double band matricing

MATRICING Teflon tape can be used to ensure proper “Adaptation” Of matrix band in Band in Band technique in DME cases

RESTORATION

TEFLON Teflon tape can be used in “ occlusal stamp technique”

.

TEFLON TAPES COMES IN A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT BRANDS AND THICKNESSES

The most commonly used 0.02mm or 0.075mm

.

How to sterilize it? How to place it??

It can be autoclaved by wrapping around a tongue depressor

Using a Blunt instrument or applicator .
