HISTORY OF TENNIS The modern sport of tennis originated from a nineteenth-century game called real tennis/royal tennis which was played in Birmingham, England. Tennis was originally known as โlawn tennisโ , because it was played on glass courts. And it is still called the same in Britain. ย Its origins are related to several lawn games played in the twelfth century such as croquet and bowls . At the initial time of its origins, the game of tennis was played with one's palm, and hence it got the name jeu de paume , i.e. game of the palm. It was only until the sixteenth century when players started using racquets, and the name 'tennis' was popularized .
An Englishman, Major Walter C. Wingfield Invented lawn tennis in 1873 & first played it at a garden party in Wales. Tennis spread to the United States by way of Bermuda. While vacationing there, Mary Ewing Outerbridge of New York was introduced (in 1874) to the game by a friend of Wingfield . She returned to the United States with a net, balls, and rackets, and with the help of her brother, she set up a tennis court in Staten Island, New York.
