5. Tetracyclines are specific inhibitors of bacterial prote i n synthesis. They bind to the 30s ribosomal subunit and thereby prevent the binding of aminoacyl tRNA to the mRNA ribosome complex .

6. Tetracyclines are broad spectrum antibiotics,active against Gram positive and Gram negative b a cteri a , s p i r o c het e s, mycoplasma, r ickettsie and chalmydiae .

7. Oral capsules is the dosage form in which tetracyclines are most commonly administered. The capsule should be taken 1/2hr before or 2hr after food. Not recommended for i.m. route of administration .
