Table of Content
▪Dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in individuals
whose kidneys can no longer perform these functions naturally. This can occur due to various
chronic kidney diseases (CKD) or acute kidney injury.
▪Causes of kidney failure are varied but generally include diabetes, polycystic kidney disease,
acute kidney injuries, high BP, heart disease, glomerulonephritis, and blocked urinary tract.
▪Dialysis becomes necessary when kidney function has deteriorated significantly, typically below
10-15% of normal function.
The key functions of kidney include:
•Filtering Blood: Kidneys remove waste products like urea, creatinine, and toxins produced by the body's
normal metabolism.
•Maintaining Electrolyte Balance: Kidneys regulate the levels of electrolytes (salts) like sodium, potassium,
and bicarbonate, which are essential for various bodily functions.
•Balancing Fluids: Kidneys control the amount of fluids in the body by removing excess fluid through urine
production.
•Hormone Production: Kidneys produce hormones that regulate blood pressure, red blood cell production, and
other important functions.

1.5 Healthcare Overview: Thailand
Public Healthcare
▪Universal Coverage: Thailand's public healthcare sector
forms the backbone of the country's Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) program
▪Ministry of Public Health (MOPH): It is a central
governing body overseeing public health policy, resource
allocation, and overall healthcare system management
▪National Health Security Office (NHSO): This agency
plays a crucial role in administering the UHC program,
including budgeting, reimbursement mechanisms, and
quality control initiatives for public healthcare providers
▪Public Health Service System: It is a network of
hospitals, health promotion centers, and clinics
▪Strengths of the Public sector: include accessibility,
affordability, focus on primary care, and standardized
practices
Private Healthcare
▪Complimentary: Private sector in Thailand's healthcare
system complements the public sector by offering a wider
range of services and catering to those seeking a more
convenient experience
▪Contracting with NHSO: Some private hospitals and
clinics contract with the NHSO to provide specific
healthcare services to UHC beneficiaries. This helps
bridge gaps in specialized care within the public sector
▪Supplemental Insurance: Many Thai citizens choose to
have private health insurance alongside UHC coverage.
This allows them to access a wider range of services
offered by the private sector or to benefit from higher
coverage limits for specific treatments
▪Benefits offered: Various services offered in the private
sector include advanced medical technology, shorter
waiting times, enhanced patient experience, and
increased access to specialized care

2. Process of Dialysis
16 A Sample Report on Thailand Dialysis Market Analysis I Confidential
2.1 Types of Dialysis
Hemodialysis Peritoneal Dialysis
Process
•Blood is removed from the body through a
surgically created access point (fistula or graft)
and circulated outside the body through a dialysis
machine. The machine filters the blood using a
dialyzer, removing waste products and excess
fluid. The cleaned blood is then returned to the
body
•A cleansing fluid (dialysate) is instilled into the
abdominal cavity (peritoneum) through a catheter.
Waste products and excess fluid from the blood
diffuse across the peritoneum membrane into the
dialysate. The dialysate is then drained out of the
body
Location
•Performed in a dialysis center or at home using a
special machine
•Performed at home, allowing for greater flexibility
in scheduling
Frequency
•Typically 3-4 hours per session, 3-7 times per
week
•Can be performed continuously or with exchanges
several times a day
Illustrative
17 A Sample Report on Thailand Dialysis Market Analysis I Confidential

2.2 Mechanisms of Dialysis
Diffusion
•Blood flows through a special filter called a dialyzer which is a semi-permeable membrane within the dialyzer machine
•On one side flows the patient’s blood
•On other side flows the cleansing fluid called the dialysate which is formulated with water and electrolytes to maintain
balance
•Due to the concentration difference, these waste products naturally want to move from an area of high concentration
(blood) to an area of low concentration (dialysate). This movement across the semipermeable membrane is diffusion
Ultrafiltration
•While diffusion removes waste products, our bodies also need a way to get rid of excess fluid that accumulates due to
malfunctioning kidneys. Here ultrafiltration’s role comes into play
•The dialysis machine can create a controlled hydrostatic pressure gradient across the dialyzer membrane. This means
applying a higher pressure on the blood side compared to the dialysate side
•This pressure gradient forces excess fluid from the blood to move across the membrane and into the dialysate
•By removing excess fluid, ultrafiltration helps control fluid balance in the body, a crucial function normally handled by
healthy kidneys

▪Thailand Food and Drug Administration (TFDA)
▪The regulatory authority for pharmaceuticals and medical devices in Thailand is the TFDA which falls under the Ministry of Public
Health
▪It plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of pharmaceuticals and medical devices available in the country
▪Responsibilities of TFDA:
▪Registration and Evaluation: The TFDA is responsible for registering, evaluating, and monitoring the safety, quality, and efficacy of all
pharmaceuticals and medical devices before they can be imported, manufactured, or distributed in Thailand.
▪Compliance Enforcement: They enforce compliance with relevant laws and regulations related to pharmaceuticals and medical
devices.
▪Consumer Protection: The TFDA safeguards public health by ensuring the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals and medical
devices available in Thailand.
▪Medical Device Control Division (MDCD)

about medical devices. Thailand's medical device regulations are based on the Medical Device Act B.E. 2551 (2008) and updated
amendments.
▪TFDA classifies medical devices into different risk categories based on their potential impact on patient safety. This classification
determines the level of regulatory scrutiny required for registration.
▪Thailand is also in the process of aligning its national legislation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Medical
Device Directives (AMDD) for greater regional harmonization.
