The 2024
Iditarod
Officially known as the Trail Sled Dog Race, the Iditarod has taken place
every year since 1973. This event is a competition between sled drivers (or
“mushers”) who lead teams of Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes, and
other northern dog breeds in a multi-day race across Alaska over varied
terrain.
The 2024 Iditarod will take place from March 2 to March 17, beginning at its traditional
starting point of Anchorage and ending at its traditional end point of Nome. With 12 to
14 dogs in each of their kennels, 34 mushers will compete in this event. The 2024 roster
of mushers includes 2023 Iditarod champion Ryan Redington, who won with a time of 8
days and about 21 hours, and 2022 Iditarod winner Brent Sass, who won with a finishing
time of 8 days and roughly 15 hours. Beyond traveling to Alaska to witness the 2024
Iditarod in person, race enthusiasts can view the race through a live stream on the
official Iditarod website.
