My Mission: To provide strategies to empower you to become confident in your next virtual Ask.

AGENDA HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH AUTHENTICITY HOW TO USE YOUR VOICE TO CONVEY YOUR MESSAGE USING YOUR ORGANIZATION’S VISION IN YOUR MESSAGING ESTABLISH YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES THROUGH MESSAGING HOW TO INSPIRE YOUR AUDIENCE USING IMAGERY AND CREATIVE COMMUNICATION

AGENDA How to Communicate with Authenticity

How to Communicate with Authenticity Stay true to your organization’s mission, values, and vision Keep your goal in mind: to build connection and community Intentional authenticity results in increased volunteer engagement. Why is that important?

How to Communicate with Authenticity Scenario #1: In person meetings with donors are not possible. Ask for a Zoom briefing with major donors. If response is low, record and send to view later

How to Communicate with Authenticity Scenario #2: Volunteer engagement has decreased within the last two years. Use your communication channels to highlight current volunteer/s by using testimonies with a call to action.

How to Communicate with Authenticity Scenario #3: Your current campaign is doing better in the last two years than in the history of your organization. Some nonprofit professionals are reluctant to tell donors how well their doing because of recent times. THIS IS THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE!

How do I communicate our cause in 2021?

2019/2020 Messaging focused on pandemic impact Messaging focused on your mission and help fulfilling it Messaging focused on the shift in services and operational changes 2021/2022 Messaging focused on post-pandemic needs Messaging focused on your vision/forward thinking Messaging focused on informing donors of the changes in your organization and the needs going forward The Communication Pivot The changes in your messaging in 2021 and beyond

Voice. Vision. Values

AGENDA How to use your voice to convey your message

Voice EXPRESSION In the pandemic, we realized the power of expression through a virtual platform. How do you tell your nonprofit story through a computer screen?

Your excitement about your projects and programs will resonate with the donor. Here is a simple exercise to help you in your communication: visit your nonprofit’s website!

R E M E M B E R People care less about titles and more about the reason you’re contacting them. I have secured more Asks in the morning than any other time.  Ask for financial support OR extend an invitation to your next (virtual) event What is the donor’s giving history? Perform Prospect Research

Voice EXPRESSION In the last two years, I secured more Asks using a virtual platform versus email or phone.

Voice. TONE Ask yourself the question… How do I come across on computer screen?

Voice. TONE What’s your body language? The attitude you present is assumed to be the attitude of your organization.

Voice POWER OF PAUSE When you talk endlessly, people either do two things: They zone out of the conversation They end the conversation before you get the OPPORTUNITY to ask.

https://fundjoy.org Tips for Introverts … Focus on info/stats about your cause rather than focusing on your thoughts, appearance and external factors.

https://fundjoy.org Tips for Ambiverts… If your personality is a mixture between an introvert and extrovert features, remain in a neutral position during the conversation.

https://fundjoy.org Tips for Ambiverts … Push your personality because you have a good balance already; you are in the perfect position to hold a great conversation in making The Ask.

https://fundjoy.org Tips for Extroverts … -Dial it back. The excitement and outgoing nature of this personality is great for communication; but in moderation. -Don’t give in to awkward pauses; may lead to rambling.

https://fundjoy.org Guess which one I am…

Voice. TIPS TO REMEMBER… Listen attentively. Try to keep your distractions to a minimum. Don't miss your cues. For example, if the donor seems confused, that’s your cue to further explain your purpose or program.

Voice. TIPS TO REMEMBER… Have an agenda in your head but not written down. Memorize stats and results. Pause when you talk. Allow the conversation to flow. Leave filler words out of the conversation.

Voice Vision Values

AGENDA Using your organization’s vision statment in your messaging

Vision. Your vision statement answers the question: How will the world look once your mission is complete?

Vision. It’s important to include your vision statement in your messaging for three reasons.

Focus 1. Vision statements explain who you are, including your programming focus.

Vision 2. Vision statements highlight your WHY, which includes the services you offer.

Vision 3. Vision statements communicate the heartbeat of your organization.

Vision. 4. It’s important for donors to understand the culture of your organization. Your vision statement is the ending to your nonprofit story.

AGENDA How to inspire using imagery and creative communication

Voice. Vision. Values. Values. Your values are your organization’s standards. The words you choose are your organization’s pillars. Your values are just as important as your mission and vision statements.

VALUES

Values: Develop 1. Develop keywords that describe who you are and what is important to your organization. When developing values, think about what you want to see in your communications.

Values: Emphasize 2. Emphasize your organization’s values by using the pillars, social media, and website pages.

Values: Include 3. Include your board and staff to aid in values messaging, especially If they have reports, websites or social media channels tied to your organization. This shows consistency in your brand.

Values: Incorporate 3. Incorporate your values into your grant proposals, white papers and annual reports. As a grant reviewer I search and use these resources in decision making.
