The all new Popeye Show!
By: Pavel Satskiy

Who owns the film?
•Hanna-Barbera produced “The All-New
Popeye Hour” in 1978-1983 on CBS.
•Hanna-Barbera was first formed in 1944 by
William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, George
Sidney
•In 1991, the company was purchased by
Turner Broadcasting System.

Representation
•Popeye is the main character and the hero of the
show. He is a sailor, with muscular fore arms and
has a tattoo of an anchor on one of his arms. He is
married to Olive Oyl and constantly battles his
wretched enemy, Bluto.
•It is his role to save Olive every time she gets
kidnapped by Bluto.
•Whenever Popeye eats spinach, he gains super
human strength which he uses to fight off all the
villains.
•Bluto is the villain of the story and is very big and
mean looking. Kidnaps Olive Oyle in almost every
seen because he is either madly in love with her or
just wants to get back at Popeye (his enemy) or
both.

Audience
•The audience of Popeye are young
children from the ages of 6-10. This age is
the most vulnerable, because it is when the
child’s personality/outlook on life starts to
develop for the first time. The scenes and
issues that the cartoon focuses on are very
simple and straight forward.

Genre/Subgenre
•The cartoon is based around the
action/adventure genre, because Popeye
sometimes has to travel a long way to
accomplish his mission. Popeye has fierce
battles with Bluto, which show the action.
•There is also some educational part to the
cartoon as well. Popeye sucesfuly
demonstrates how healthy spinach is for
you. Important lessons about safety.

Narrative
•The Narrative follows Todorov’s theory,
because there is always peace and calm in
the beginning of the show. However as the
story goes on, a villain of some sort always
comes into play and needs to be stopped
by Popeye and his spinach. At the end of
the cartoon, there is peace and quite once
again.

What is the relevance of animation in
our society?
•Animation is mostly aimed at the younger
audience, since animation has bright colours
and usually involves stereotypes for children to
recognize.
Ex. Bluto has a low, deep voice which makes
him sound evil and scary.
•Since most of the audience of animations are
children, it is vital that the content which is in
the cartoons are suitable for the children and
will not corrupt them in any way.
