A serious public health issue nowadays is the emergence of
drug resistant ‘superbugs’ which are resistant to all known
antibiotics. Several mechanisms are known to contribute to
this antibiotic resistance. One of them involves a certain
enzyme called NDM-1 which is responsible for the resistance
of Klebsiella pneumoniae, which is responsible for
carbapenem resistance. The enzyme NDM-1 was first
described in a Swedish man who fell ill after coming back
from his travels. The name was termed as ‘geographically
inaccurate’ as it was seen in organisms in Eastern Europe, as
well as in other locations in the initial country, a hotbed for
antibiotic resistance. If M-1 stands for
Metallobetalactamase-1, what does ND stand for?
