Mica loved tiny secrets. “What is BIO-
technology, Grandpa Ferdi?” she asked,
holding a blue-tinted magnifying glass.
Grandpa Ferdi, wearing a brilliant blue apron
over his lab coat, winked. “It’s using the littlest
living things to make the biggest changes in
the world!”Part 1: The Blue Lab

microscopic workers! They make
our fluffy bread, tasty blue cheese,
and even important medicines
possible. We get to work right
beside nature’s tiniest helpers!”
Page 3 / 10 The Tiny Bakers “Our first amazing
helper is Yeast!” he whispered, pulling
out a small blue tin. “They are the
tiniest bakers in the world. We use
them in bread dough to make it rise!
That’s called Fermentation.” Part 2: The Tiny Bakers
We will mix yeast, warm water, and
sugar in a bottle. Then, stretch a
deflated balloon over the top. The tiny
yeast will "eat" the sugar and "breathe
out" invisible gas that will inflate the

patch, which had a blue net over it. “This
is Plant Power,” said Grandpa Ferdi. “We
choose the best seeds from the biggest,
shiniest blueberries to grow even better
ones next year. That's Selective
Breeding!”

giggled, holding a basket full of
perfect, deep-blue berries. We
help nature make its dream team!

Part 4: The Secret Scroll“But the littlest secret of all,”
Grandpa Ferdi said, leading her
back into the blue lab, “Is the
instruction manual inside every
single cell. It's called DNA. It tells a
strawberry exactly how to be a
strawberry!”
Page 8 / 10Strawberry DNA! First, crush one
juicy strawberry in a clear bag.
Then, mix it with special blue
soapy water. The soap helps us
break open the tiny cell walls so
the instruction manual can
escape!
Experiment 2: Strawberry DNA!
Pour the soupy mix into a clear jar.
Now, slowly add super-cold, bright
blue rubbing alcohol. Wait! A cloudy,
stringy, white cloud will float to the
top. “That’s it!” Mica shouted. “The
instructions! That’s the DNA!” Page 9 / 10
Mica smiled. From the invisible
yeast to the secret instructions for
a blueberry, she knew the world
was full of tiny, amazing helpers.

business, ready for the next
