2. What is the British Invasion?
•Term used by media and consumers.
•It was the influx of rock and roll on America in the mid 1960s. When
The Beatles became popular in the US they started a wave of other
British bands following their footsteps.
•Other Bands included: The Kinks, Animals, Rolling Stones, Who,
Herman’s Hermits, Chad and Jeremy, and more.

3. The Beatles
•It all began with the teens of Liverpool, England picking up a
hazy radio signal from Luxemburg that held the listeners
captive. This particular radio station played a type of music
mysterious to these adolescents; rock and roll.
•Four of these teens, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George
Harrison, & Ringo Star would later become, The Beatles.
•Each of these teens grew up playing music and listening to
their rock and roll idols.
•The Beatles liked the name “Buddy Holly and the Crickets”
because of how the double word play of cricket, both a bug
and English sport cracked them up.
•The Beatles got their name from combining the movie
“Backbeat” and the bug, beetle.

4. The Beatles in America
•The Beatles arrived in America On February 7
th

•They made their first of four appearances on The Ed Sullivan
Show February 9

•On February 11

The Beatles perform at the Washington, D.C.
Coliseum Theater and sold out 18,000 seats.
•The Beatles were on the top of the US Pop charts with “I Want
To Hold Your Hand” in 1964.
•The first time The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show
they had over 50 million viewers which was a record breaking
audience. They played “All My Loving”, “Till There Was You”,
“She Loves You”, and “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.
