THE CELLULAR JAIL

Every patriotic Indian, should know about the inhumane cruelty meted out towards our citizens, by the dirty, cruel British deceivers. They tortured and killed thousands of our brave men, inside Cellular Jail, which today, stands as epitaph of one of the worst indignities the cruel British, inflicted upon India and its gallant freedom fighters. This is my humble attempt to bring this monument, to the attention of this world.

TheCellularJail,situatedinSouthAndamanisaIndianNationalMonumentasdeclaredby
PrimeMinisterMorarjiDesaionFebruary11,1979.Todayitthatstandsasthesymbolof
extremecrueloppressionofthePoliticalprisoners&freedomfightersofBritishIndia.The
constructionofthisinstitutionoftortureandsolitaryconfinementforlife,startedintheyear
1896andwascompletedby1906.Thebuildingwasapucecolouredone,withthebricksforthe
construction,beingbroughtfromBurma.Theconstructionwasundertakenbythedetainees
themselves,undersupervisionoftheBritish.ItcostaroundRs.5.17lakhtotheBritishrulers.
DuringtheJapaneseoccupation,twowingsofthejailweredemolished.Twomorewerepulled
downafterIndependence.

namefromthe698cellsin7wingsofvariouslengths,allradiatingfromacenterWatch
Tower,likethespokesofawheel,whichpreventedtheinmatesfromcommunicatingto
eachother.Eachcellwas14.8X8.9ft,withaventilatoratanheightof9.8feet.Thecells
werenotprovidedwithurinalorlavatoryfacilities.Theinmatesweregivenclaypotstobe
usedasurinalsinthenight.Theknowledgeoftreatmentmetedouttohumanlivesinside
thisbuilding,isonethatwillfanhatredfortheBritish,eventoday.

ItwasontherecommendationofCharlesJamesLyallwhoservedashomesecretaryinthe
BritishRajgovernment,andASLethbridge,asurgeonintheBritishadministrationwho,on
theirappointmentasmeninchargeofsearchingforapenalsettlementinPortBlair,
concludedthatthepunishmentoftransportationofdetaineestotheAndamanIslandswas
failingtoachievethepurposeintendedandthata“severepenalstage"shouldexistinthe
transportationsentence,wherebytransportedprisonerswillbesubjectedtoaperiodof
harshtreatmentuponarrival.TheoutcomewastheconstructionoftheCellularJail,which
hasbeendescribedas"aplaceofexclusionandisolation”bythecruelBritish.

Thisislandpenitentiarywasaplacethatinvolvedactivitieslikeinhumantorture,
medicaltests,forcedlabourand,formany,death.Inmatesweretreatedto
unimaginableactsofforcedfeedingthroughthenostrilsandtherectum.Floggingwas
adaytodayactivitytheBritishenjoyedwithgreatenthusiasm.Whensomeneeded
medicalaidforfevers,thedutydoctorssignedpapersstatingthattheywerefitenough
tobeflogged.

Workontheoilgrindingmillwasallthemoreterribleandcausedseveraldeaths.Often
theprisonersbecamebreathless,withtheirtonguesparchedup,limbsnumb,hands
bruisedandthebrainreeling.Andtheircrime?Theylovedtheirmotherland.
ItwasjailerDavidBarrywhowasordainedtosuppressBritain’senemieswithvile
abuseandcrudeviolence.Buthehadtopayforhissins.Terminallyill,hewassentto
Calcuttasomewhereinmid-1920s,nevertoreachEngland.
TodaytheCellularJailhasbeennominatedbyGovtofIndia,toberecognizedasa
‘WORLDHERITAGEMONUMENT’byUNESCO.
