Introduction What is PTSD and What happened with P? 01
Trauma occurs to a person because they experience a problem that shakes the soul and makes it difficult to accept the negative event as part of life ( Gumelar & Hermawati , 2021). The term trauma is understood not as injury or damage to the body, but damage to a person's soul or mental state. If a child experiences continuous trauma as a result of the violence they receive, it is possible that the child will suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or what is usually called PTSD ( Margolin & Vickerman , 2007). Various types of PTSD symptoms in the novel Tanah Lada PTSD symptoms include traumatic experiences (re-experiencing) Symptoms of PTSD avoid parents (avoid any attachment style) PTSD symptoms include negative thoughts PTSD symptoms of despair and hallucinations
When a child experiences physical or emotional abuse, it can be a traumatic experience. This pain takes various forms, including anxiety, panic attacks, and unforgettable memories ( Andini et al., 2023). The 5 data above are evidence that character P experienced a traumatic experience (re-experiencing). The traumatic experience that P experienced came from his father who always gave him bad memories, tortured him and left deep trauma. Data 1 and 2 show P's skepticism and fear of his father's anger. This is because P often gets bad treatment. In the conversation in data 3, it can be seen that there was physical violence that occurred against P. Data 4 is the reason for the physical violence that occurred and data 5 shows the strong attitude of character P because he was afraid of his father's anger. The data above shows the facts of the traumatic experience faced by P, which made P skeptical, excessively afraid, trying to be strong and sad Data 1 “Anyway, don't. If I dare touch my father's things, he will be furious to death. Then you might get scolded too." (page 47) Data 2 "But later Sis Suri told Papa," complained P, the busker boy. “Later Papa will be even angrier. Papa can also hit Sis Suri if she gets angry." (page 68) Data 3 “ Ow !” Pepper shrieked. He pulled his arm that I was holding. "Sick." Then, I saw it: a horrible burn on Pepper's arm. (page 132) Data 4 "That's why he's angry, huh?" Pepper shook her head. "No. He just doesn't like me being at home. It just so happened that there was an iron there. He's using it." (page 135) Data 5 "Why aren't you crying? I asked. “That, right, really hurts. If it were me, I would have cried." "Because if I cry, Papa gets even more angry." (page 136) PTSD symptoms include traumatic experiences (re-experiencing)
The data attached above shows that character P always tries to avoid his father, because he knows that his father doesn't like seeing P. Data 1 initially shows that P avoids meeting or making eye contact with Papa. This is because of his father's hateful and cruel attitude. It is confirmed in data 2 that Papa P is always annoyed when he sees P around him. Then data 3 and 4 show that P tried to hide his things from Papa. This was done so that his father would not take and destroy all of P's belongings. To realize this, P always tried to avoid Papa's sight. In data 5, it can be seen again that P does not have the courage to be near his father. These symptoms arise because P always gets bad treatment, so P feels traumatized and chooses to avoid his father. Data 1 "You don't want to go home?" He shook his head. "Can't go home." "Why can't you go home?" "You can't go home," he said. "Later, when it's past 7 o'clock, you can enter the house." (page 26) Data 2 "Why can't you go into your room when your father is there?" "Because, then he'll get angry." "Why? You're loud, aren't you?” The Busker Boy shook his head. "No. Papa just gets annoyed when he sees me." (page 39) Data 3 He first put his bicycle among the bushes behind the flat. "If I found out I had a bicycle, Papa would definitely take it," he said. (page 115) Data 4 He shook his head. “No, but he doesn't like it when I have something. That's why I always have to carry my cellphone. If they're found out, they'll take them too." (page 116) Data 5 “Sometimes, I also bathe here. I borrowed my mother's bathtub and showered there. If Papa is in the room, I can't take a shower, you know.” (page 118) 2. Symptoms of PTSD avoid parents (avoid any attachment style)
Violence against children can have long-term traumatic effects, so often children who are victims of violence always think negatively. This was also experienced by character P who showed symptoms of PTSD with the emergence of negative thoughts. Data 1 to 4 illustrate the emotions of character P, that he always thinks negatively about his father's attitude. P always thinks his father is evil, because of his bad treatment. P also always thinks negatively that he is hated by his father, this is the reason that he is often tortured. Data 5 shows P's skeptical attitude, he does not trust adults. This happened because since childhood, P never felt love and appreciated his existence. Therefore, when he had the intention to leave, he chose not to say goodbye to Mas Alri and Kak Suri because negative thoughts arose about what the two adults would do. Data 1 The child busker is thinking. "My papa also likes to say thank you." "Papa are you good?" He shook his head. Data 2 "But my Papa also hates me, Sis. That's why my name is also strange." Data 3 “Oh yeah? My dad is bad too, right? Maybe all Papas are bad.” Data 4 “Understand, really. Besides, Papa said, I hurt my eyes. "If you get pepper, it also hurts your eyes." Data 5 "Do you want to tell Mas Alri and Sis Suri , or not, that you want to go? “No, ah. Later, they banned it. Hassle." 3. PTSD symptoms include negative thoughts
Violence against children can cause depression, where characters in novels may experience feelings of deep sadness, hallucinations and hopelessness ( Andini et al., 2023). They may feel hopeless or lose hope because of the traumatic experiences they have experienced ( Magfirah , 2023). Data 1 and 2 show that character P is hallucinating that he can fly. From these indications, it can be explored further that the dominance of the id is a factor in character P's desire to fly, which means that P has an implicit desire to end his life. In data 3, it can be seen that P is hopeless about his future because he does not go to school so he is sad and insecure about Salva . In data 4 and 5, it can be seen from the narrative that Salva's point of view shows P's expression which refers to despair. The emotional climax of despair is found in data 5 which shows P finally crying and letting out everything he had been holding in all this time Data 1 "You can die, right?" "It's possible, of course. But I really want to fly." "Really, you can fly?" "I want that. (page 117) Data 2 "I can't fly, can I?" He shook his head. “I can fly. You can usually swim. I can't swim." (page 119) Data 3 "It might be difficult if you want to be smart, but don't go to school." "Yeah," he muttered. Pepper's face was flat, but I thought she was really sad Data 4 She didn't say anything, but for some reason I thought I could hear Pepper screaming “AAAAA!!!” He said nothing. But his face looked like someone screaming “AAAAA!!!” out loud. Data 5 Then, stunned. I was stunned because Pepper wasn't just talking. He also sobbed. Like when people cry. And, then, I realized that he was indeed crying. What dripped from the bridge of his nose were tears. 4. PTSD symptoms of despair and hallucinations
