ETYMOLOGY OF DRUG Etymologically derived from the Middle Dutch word  " droge ( vate )" meaning "dry (barrels)" , referring to medicinal plants preserved as dry matter in barrels.

DEFINITON OF DRUG The World Health Organization Defines drug as a substance that can alter the physiological functioning of a living creature.

Drug abuse is linked to drug addiction and drug dependence Drug addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to use a drug, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences. Repetitive drug use often alters brain function in ways that perpetuate craving, and weakens self-control. Drug dependence is   a chronic, progressive disease characterized by significant impairment that is directly associated with persistent and excessive use of a psychoactive substance . Impairment may involve physiological, psychological, or social dysfunction.

GLOBAL DRUG SURVEY 2022 The greatest percentage of recent drug use occurs between ages of 16-24y for all drugs except cocaine that peaks in the 25-34y old age group. The percentage of last year drug use more than halves between the age of 25 and 50 for almost all drugs. The high percentage for tobacco use among the younger drug using populations is a concern.
