10 The Four Elements
burning incense. If a candle, and not the incense, represents Fire, then fire just sort of
hangs around; it isn't enough of a fame to warm the circle, and if it's providing light, one
candle isn't enough (l tend towards four or five candles with different symbolic mean-
ings-and that's enough light). Finally, if a candle represents the Goddess, and a candle
represents the God, then a candle representing Fire itself seems, again, unbalanced.
As you see, my effort here is to have a cohesive symbol system-we'll come back to
that idea again and again. However you choose to arrange your altar, choose in a way
that makes sense, not just for the one item, but for the overall whole. Air, Fire, Water,
and Earth combine and become One, and that One should fit together as perfectly and
seamlessly as a wooden puzzle box-the kind that is hard to take apart again, because it
looks like a solid block.
W'ater
The natural forms of water are myriad. Not just the sea, but every body of water from
a little creek to the Great Lakes.
'Water
is also found in our bodies; in the clichdd
"blood, sweat, and tears"; in mother's milk; and, perhaps most importantly, in amni-
otic fluid. Just
as life first evolved in the sea, the fetus swims in salt water as it "evolves"
and develops. Since all bodies of water have tides, the moon is also associated with
water, and many lunar qualities are also \7ater qualities.
Sea creatures-both plant and animal-are connected to
'W'ater:
fish, eels, shells,
coral, seaweed, sponges, and drifrwood all partake of this element. Dolphins and
whales are often the creatures most associated with Water, although I suspect this has
more to do with our affection for them than with any natural or symbolic imperative.
The personal quality of \7ater is
feeling.
Emotion flows, following its own path,
which may meander. Emotion runs deep, with mysterious depths not visible on the
surface. Emotions bring forth secrets like sunken treasure. Emotionaliry and mood
swings are, of course, associated with the moon as well, as are secret5-1he5s things vis-
ible just a little bit, lit by moonlight and not exposed in the Sun. In the Throt, the card
The Moon is full of warery images; crustaceans crawl up from water, and the card's
meaning is rooted in secrets, mysteries, and hidden knowledge.
The Moon is the menstrual cycle, and \7ater is childbirth as well, making'Water
perhaps the most feminine of elements. Since moon phases are cyclic, ending where
