The Evolution of The Internet By Daisy Pickles
ACCESS TO THE INTERNET Since 2005 the number of internet users has increased by over 5 times There are lots of variables as to why this dramatic increase has happened. One being the massive drop in the cost of accessing the internet, in 2005 the average price of a laptop was $1,o81 compared to just $495 in 2022.
CONSUMER TRENDS In 2022 it was projected $40 billion worth of transactions will be made through devices like Google Home and Amazon Echo Online video consumption trends show that people are consuming more content than ever before with on average people are watching 17 hours of video footage a week
DIGITAL DEVICES USED BY AUDIENCES The Samsung family hub fridge freezer which allows you to remotely see the contents in your fridge as well as Smart Things Cooking which suggests recipes based on what you have in your fridge, is a great example of technology designed for human convenience Recent technological advancements has caused an explosion in household digital devices Smart fridge market size was valued at $2.66 Billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $6.39 Billion by 2030
DIGITAL DEVICES USED BY AUDIENCES Apple IOS is the leading smartwatch, due to it’s sleek design and the technological advancements in IOS operating systems The Global smartwatch market size was valued at USD $25.61 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow from $29.31 billion in 2023 to $77.22 billion by 2030
ONLINE VIDEO CONSUMPTION Gen Z has a much shorter attention span than millennials or boomers when it comes to watching videos online, resulting in the obsession with TikTok and the sharp incline of time spent on the app as well as the drop in apps like Facebook TikTok Engagement keeps going up Contributing Factors; High Volumes of Content Easily Accessible Free Personalized Algorithm Only one action is needed to switch between videos (swiping)
HOW CONSUMERS SEARCH FOR INFORMATION On TikTok, “you see how the person actually felt about where they ate” said Nailah Roberts, 25, who uses the app to look for restaurants in Los Angeles, where she lives. A long-winded written review of a restaurant can’t capture its ambience, food and drinks like a bitesize clip can. For GenZ TikTok is the new search engine, real people giving real reviews and opinions on anything and everything “In our studies, something like 40% of young people, when they're looking for a place for lunch, they don’t go to Google Maps or Search. They go to TikTok or Instagram” Prabhakar Raghavan, a Google senior vice president, said at a technology conference in July.
What Consumers Buy Online BLACK FRIDAY In 2021 155 million Americans shopped Black Friday deals 50% of Americans shopped Black Friday online In 2021 the average American spent $430 on Black Friday
Summary The internet has evolved to optimize human convenience, it has helped speed up and simplify day-to-day life, as well as improving businesses, healthcare and many other aspects of life. Has the internet made humans lazy? Possibly, being able to shop, work and be entertained all from the comfort of our own homes with just a tap of our fingers or a simple voice command to “Siri” or “Alexa” has drastically changed the way we live our lives. Is it all that bad though? Connecting with friends and family has never been easier no matter where in the world they are. Businesses have boomed and had the opportunity to go global, this has provided many more job opportunities for people all across the globe that they wouldn’t have had before. Has the internet helped boost all businesses? Well not quite, for example, whereas some retailers such as Nike and H&M have boomed since 2005 smaller independent businesses have felt the pressure more than ever as keeping pricing down is impossible when you’re competing with giants, opening a shop in your town is no longer enough for it to be successful you need an online presence, even then the road to success is very slim. In conclusion, the evolution of the internet has benefited humans in many ways, but it has also brought a very dark side to the world a whole new realm of crime and danger that we have never faced before has been created, it has also accelerated global warming by creating an over-consuming population. The Internet is ever-changing and expanding there is no doubt that it will carry on to further infiltrate our lives and change the world in both positive and negative ways.
