Aim
The aim of this lecture is to bring to note the
changes that are happening around us with respect
to the technologies that make up the fourth
industrial revolution, how to become conscious of
how they affect us as individuals, our families, and as
officers and soldiers in the Nigerian Airforce and
what we can do to take advantage of these changes
for our benefit.
What can we do in the next
five years with what we have,
but use it differently… It’s
really about changing our
mindset and how we imagine
using what we have, we put
them together in new ways
to get a better deterrent
effect than what we have
today”

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIONS
The 4th Industrial Revolution
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4thIR) is the latest in a series of
relatively sudden and drastic technological changes which have profoundly
transformed not only economics, but also societies, national security and
other areas.
Tangible facets of the 4thIR include the mobile internet, facilitated by
affordable smartphones and tablet computers, integrated and networked
advanced sensor technology, and machine learning partnered with artificial
intelligence (AI).
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is distinguishable from the third because
it is where humans meet the cyber world; where technology and people are
not distinct, not separate. We had the PC and we had a life – today our
devices and sensors will become an extension of us. Facebook is an
extension of us. Our smartphones and smartwatches are extensions who
we are and what we do
Technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution
1- Robots, Cobots and Autonomous Machines
2-Digitally Extended Realities (AR, VR, and MR)
3-Artificial Intelligence (AI)
4-Digital Twins
5-Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers
6- Additive Manufacturing
Robots, Cobots and Autonomous machines: robots can be
defined as intelligent machines that can understand and
respond to their environment and perform routine or complex
tasks autonomously. (UAV's{Wing Loong II, CH-4 and CH-3},
UGV's)
The Personnel
Build a knowledge base
Engage younger generation to build and prepare
The Nigerian Airforce
Base Protection
Pros
Operational and situational awareness (SA).
Real-time targeting aid
Enhanced spatial awareness
Cons
Information Overload.
Security of systems and data
Digitally Extended Realities (AR, VR and MR) refers to the use of technology
to create more immersive digital experiences, using computer technology to
fully immerse the user in a simulated digital environment, to the
extent that they feel like they’re physically in that environment, or information and
images can be overlaid onto what the user is seeing in the real world and is allowed
to interact with them to certain degrees.
The Personnel
Build a knowledge base
Engage younger generation to build and prepare
Invest in organizations that play in the space
The Nigerian Airforce
Flight Simulation and Pilot Training
Battlefield simulation
Medic training (battlefield)
Vehicle simulation
Aircraft Inspection and Maintainance
Pros
Operational and situational awareness (SA).
Safer training environments
More accessed mission rehearsals
Terrain diversity and customization
Real-time targeting aid
Enhanced spatial awareness
Cons
Information Overload.
Security of systems and data
Dependence on XR technologies
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning refers to the ability
of machines to learn and act intelligently – meaning they can make
decisions, carry out tasks, and even predict future outcomes based on
what they learn from data. (Siri on your Iphone)
The Personnel
Build a knowledge base
Engage younger generation to build and prepare
The Nigerian Airforce
Advent in the curriculum in Force Educational institutions
Pros
Rational, data-driven decisions; less bias
Removal of “irrational exuberance”
Reorganization of outdated bureaucracies
Greater efficiency of operations
Cost reduction
Efficiency gains
Cons
Information Overload.
Security of systems and data
Accountability
A digital twin is a dynamic, up-to-date replica of a physical
asset that brings together design, construction and
operational data. With the addition of real-time operational
data, digital twins acquire the behavioral awareness
necessary to simulate, predict and inform decisions based on
real-world conditions.
The Personnel
Build a knowledge base
Engage younger generation to build and prepare
The Nigerian Airforce
Basic adoption unto simple but expensive platforms
Training of personnel on the adoption of the
technology
Pros
Operational and situational awareness (SA).
Increased efficiency in using resources
Rise in productivity
More transparency around the use and state of resources
Safety
Efficiency (logistics)
Cons
Information Overload.
More demand for storage and bandwidth
Security of systems and data
Data Quality
Blockchain is essentially a way of storing data, a distributed ledger (i.e.
a database), where the data is distributed (i.e. duplicated) across many
computers and is typically decentralized meaning there’s
no one central point of attack for hackers to target – which is part of
what makes blockchain super-secure.
The Personnel
Build a knowledge base
Engage younger generation to build and prepare
Invest in blockchain-based organizations
The Nigerian Airforce
Application in logistics
Application in encryption and sharing of classified
information
Pros
Safer and more accurate recording and transmission of data.
Cons
Regulation
Summary and Key Takeaways
The 4thIR’s positive and negative influences have been examined with
respect to the Nigerian Airforce, and the analysis has been classified
according to the revolution’s effect on military manpower(personnel),
intelligence, logistics or supply, and operations.
Above all things we are migrating into an age where there will be a flood of
data and multiple applications of it, the major challenges we will face will be
in the timely understanding and adoption of these technologies to match
our environment.
We have to remain aware of Cyberattacks and how the data we share can
be used against us.
1-HoloLens MR headsets for inspection on the AW109 (EM and LUH).
2-Meta Quest headsets for training of Airmen on the basics of groundchecks prior to hands-on
training with said platform.
3-Varjo VR headsets for the immersive training of Helicopter Pilots, a step higher in simulation for
various flight sceneries.
4-Drone guard for Base Ops night using Easy Aerial Albatross Multi-Payload Autonomous
Tethered Drone Surveillance System.
5-Digital Twins of the Mil Mi17, Airbus H135, and Bell 412 Helicopters using the GPMS foresight
programme.
6-Distributed ledger for filing, supply chain, logistics and real-time payment within the base.
7. One time password (OTP) cryptography and call signs or code names for entrance to the base
