The Functions Of Modal Auxiliary Verbs
DEF:>
modal auxiliaries are true auxiliaries in the sense that exist only in association
with other verbs
The Use Of Modal Auxiliaries
1=Shall,Should
(i)Shall
shall is used for first person to indicate future time.
for e.g
(a) i shall sit there.
(b)we shall sing a song for you.
(ii)=shall
shall is used for the second and third person to indicate determination,to
express a promise,a threat,or a command.
For e.g
(a) you shall be punished. (promise)
(b)you shall be ignored. (threat)
(iii)=should
should is not often as the past form of “shall” because it has the special
meaning of obligation or desirability.
For e.g
(a) we should believe our friends. (responsibility)
(b)you should prepare for exams. (desire)
(iv)=Should
should can also be used in conditional sentence in place of “if” with the root
form of verb (first form without any addition)
for e.g
(a) if he comes,I will respect him. (condition with…if)
(b)should he come,I will believe him. (condition with….should)
2=Will,Would
(i)Will
will is used with the second and third person to express simple future tense.
for e.g
(a)You will go to see him tomorrow. (will+1
st
form)

(b)He will join our company next month. (will+1
st
form)
(ii)will
will is used for the first person to convey the special meaning of a promise or
assertion.
for e.g
(a)I will help; surely. (promise)
(b)be sure,we will play. (assertion)
(iii)would
is the past tense form of will and is used for the same purpose.
for e.g
(a)I promised that I would go there. (past followed by past)
(b)He knew that he would be loved. (past followed by past)
(iv)Would
would is used in polite communication,especially in a request invitation.
for e.g
(a)Would you come to our house? (request)
(b)would you like to have tea? (invitation)
(v)Would
would is also used to show habit in the past.
for e.g
(a)He would exercise daily. (it was his habit)
(b)He would always play cricket in the morning. (it was his habit to)
3=CAN,COULD
(i)CAN
can and could are used to express ability: can in the present tense and could in
the past tense.
for e.g
(a)I can see the house from here. (present)
(b)I could see the river from here. (past)
4=MAY,MIGHT
(i)MAY AND MIGHT are used to express possibility:may in the present tense and
might in the past. “might” is used in present tense to express greater doubt or
weaker possibility than “may”
for e.g
(a)it may hot today. (possibility present tense)
(b)He said it might cold today. (possibility in the past)
(ii)MAY

may is also used for giving permission,while “might” is to ask for permission in a
more polite way.
for e.g
(a)may I love you? (askin for permission)
(b)Yes,you may love me. (giving permission)
(iii)MAY
may is also used to express a fervent wish,

6=OUGHT
(i)ought as an auxiliary must be followed by the to-infinitive of the main verb.

must

rd
form of verb.
