The Himalayas

Formation of the Himalayas Himalayas are New fold mountains formed due to the collision of the denser Indian plate and the lighter Eurasian plate . This process occurred 50 million years ago and is still continues till this day.

Division of himalayas The Himalayas on the basis of their size and locations are divided into 4 major groups namely - ➤Trans Himalayas ➤ Greater Himalayas ➤Middle Himalayas ➤Shivalik or lesser himalayas ➤Purvanchal Himalayas

Trans Himalayas Trans himalays are the northernmost himalayas. Some part of it also lies in tibet , So it is also known as tibetan himalayas . These mountains lie in the eurasian plane. Karakonam , Zaskar, Kailash and ladak are some famous mountain ranges in this part of the himalayas.

Greater Himalayas This range is home of one of the most tallest and biggest mountains in the world with and average height of 6100 metres and width of 25km , this range starts from the south of trans himalayas and stretches till namcha barva . This range is also known as Himadri .

Some highest mountains which lie in this range are- ➤Kanchenjuga ➤Nanga parvat ➤Namcha Barva ➤Annapurna ➤Nanda Devi ➤Badrinath

Middle Himalayas These Himalayas lies south of Himadri and starts from Jammu and Kashmir and exist till Arunachal Pradesh. There heights ranges from 1300 to 5100 metres. Pir panjal , Dhola Dhar , Mussorie range and Mahabharat are examples of some of ranges here.

The Middle Himalayas also host magnificent hill stations like - ➤Kullu Manali ➤Shimla ➤Ranikhet ➤Darjeling ➤Gulmarg ➤ Mussorie

Shiwaliks Shiwaliks are the southernmost and youngest parts of the himalayas. The average height of these are around 1300 metres. Among these himalayas duns are formed , the valleys are accumulated with coarse of alluvium passed down by himalayan rivers. Examples include kotli dun , dehra dun, patli dun etc.

Purvanchal Himalchal After Crossing dibang gorge the Himalayas take a southern bend , form here they are Know as purvanchal. Purvanchal is basically a range of low hills lying parallel to myanmar border. Some examples are patkai hills , naga hills , mizo hills etc.
