The Importance of Open Source to Simulation Infrastructure 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd 1 Dr. Tim Pokorny, Calytrix Technologies
Introductions Dr. Tim Pokorny CTO, Calytrix Technologies Engineering Fellow, TitanIM DMT Technical Delivery Lead 15 years simulation integration & development Distributed Simulation, DIS & HLA Systems Integration 2 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Agenda The importance of Open Source Software (OSS) in infrastructure The role it can and should play in our future technology mix. What problems do we face? How can open source help? The challenge facing adoption The opportunity in new projects. 3 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
4 Open Source Infrastructure Software 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Open Source Infrastructure Software Shift in the delivery of computing resources over the past 5 years Cloud and Virtualized infrastructure Rise of mobile computing Real-Time Messaging at the scale of hundreds of millions All present challenges for the infrastructure that supports them All heavily leverage Open Source Software 5 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Open Source Infrastructure Software OSS not only powers the web, but its plumbing, deployment, orchestration and delivery Operating systems of scale Web Servers Virtualisation Platforms Orchestration/Provisioning Databases Routers 6 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd Message Bus System APIs Big-Data Compute Load Balancers Authentication and Security More…
Open Source Infrastructure Software De-facto standard for tools driving all major infrastructure stacks Why? Leverage large community of developers Supported by companies which use them Reduce the barrier to entry Freely available for all to get involved in – from big to small When common platform exists, it raises the bar for all involved Nobody differentiating on baseline or “given” functionality 7 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
8 The Problem for M&S 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
The Problem M&S for Training and Sim is the opposite to mainstream Locked-up: Proprietary, FMS, ITAR restricted, inaccessible Results in smaller pods of development Simply achieving connectivity still considered a win Not just about financial cost Licensing costs are a double whammy: Cost and Access Pushes integration to a second class citizen Knock-on effect of the empty room 9 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
The Problem Biggest loss is in innovation looking forward Infrastructure is not a training solution – it is an enabler Time and focus goes to training outcome, which is held back by the effort and bespoke nature of the infrastructure GFX not a solution – chicken and egg Growing ambition to use big infrastructure to deliver simulation Australia: JP9711 Phase 1 US: Synthetic Training Environment Do we have the tools to support this? 10 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
11 How can OSS Help? 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
How can OSS Help? Availability – not a walled garden Redistribution Rights – share with our allies and partners Accessibility and Learning – A more meaningful learning tool Customisation – Free to turn to our needs Longevity – Available once the project moves on A platform to support goals to make M&S infrastructure commodity 12 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
13 The Challenge 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
The Challenge OSS isn't free - requires investment Because of the adjunct status, it isn't critical enough to force investment - the cumulative effect of which is stagnation. Commitment - budgets are transient and without ownership it is an entirely volunteer effort which will have limited effect. Open Source still needs Open Standards 14 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
15 The Opportunity 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
The Opportunity Domestically, JP9711 represents a significant opportunity Opportunity to treat some of the issues discussed FMS and ITAR Infrastructure we can adapt for our needs Raise the bar and commoditize capability at this foundational level Projects exist that can built on - Australia has legacy in this area 16 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Somewhere to begin Open source tools exist and can be supported Open LVC Initiative started by individuals Supported by Calytrix Technologies Mission: Provide free and open M&S infrastructure with the necessary support to help ensure its readiness for mission critical application 17 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Open Source M&S: Portico Open Source HLA RTI Established in 2007 Funding received from government and commercial groups Local and long-haul support – federations realising DMT 18 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Open Source M&S: DISCO Suite of DIS tools and infrastructure Application library for integrators Load and system testing Long-haul connectivity Record and replay An baseline integrator’s toolkit Powering DMT 2016 testing and delivery 19 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Conclusion In a mature ecosystem, infrastructure is not a differentiator – it is a solved problem M&S infrastructure remains difficult, and is not improving Our goals and ambitions for sim delivery are growing, but we are still stuck on first-level issues 20 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
Conclusion OSS is a growth engine – treat some of the root causes Participation Commodity Baseline OSS requires investment With projects like JP9711 we have the opportunity to change this 21 2016 Calytrix Technologies Pty Ltd
