THE IMPORTANCE OF
VISUAL HIERARCHY IN
WEBSITE DESIGN
www.webdesignerscoventry.co.uk

The term visual hierarchy probably
sounds more complicated than it is. In
essence, it’s the method by which our
brain processes order and size. Most
of the time, we probably don’t even
realise we’re performing this function,
but it’s vital to how we perceive the
world. It’s also one of the most
prominent tools for functional and
appealing website design.

How visual hierarchy
translates to website
design
If you think of the way that newspaper headlines
work, they display the main headline with large
typography and then a smaller sub-heading.
That’s because not all of the information on
your website will deserve the same level of
importance, and therefore, attention.
The key to effective website design is to attract
users’ attention. By highlighting specific parts of
your site, such as a firm call to action, you will
give that element prominence over others. For
example, if you look at the Coventry City FC
website, the club crest immediately draws your
eye towards it before your eyes gaze naturally
settles on the menu bar.

By determining which parts are essential to your
site, you will be able to develop, over time, a
website conversion funnel that will allow you to
make the most of your site.

What will a website
designer do?
A web designer will be aware that most people
don’t want to see large swathes of text; they
need information that they can absorb at a
glance. Therefore the primary role of a web
designer is to take the base information and
display it on the site in a visually appealing way
and most importantly, in a method that
communicates well to the user.

If you own a business in Coventry and require a
website, or if you own an existing site that
would benefit from an overhaul, arrange an
appointment with our knowledgeable team
