THE LAW OF TABLE TENNIS Prepared by: Sir Marlon L. Calip

When is it a let in table tennis? A Let is called on points that don't count. When you serve a ball that bounces on your side, then hits the net, but continues over and bounces on the opponent's side of the table, that is a 'let' and does not count.

When it is a point? During a serve, if the ball hits the net but still bounces on the opponent's side of the table, the point is a let (which means it needs to be replayed). If the ball hits the net and doesn't make it to the other half of the table, the receiver is automatically awarded a point.

Game match A game is won by being the first player to win 11 points, and be at least 2 points ahead of his or her opponent. If both players have won 10 points, then the first player to get a 2 point lead wins the game. A match is the best of 5 games. The score begins at 0-0, and the server will serve first.

A serve in table tennis is when the serving player throws the ball from their free hand and then strikes it with their paddle. The serving player must strike the ball so it hits their own side first, clears the net and then lands on their opponent's half of the table.

Types of service in table tennis Forehand serves. Backhand serves. High toss serves. Back spin serves. Pendulum serves. Tomahawk serves. Chop serves.

Receiving and ends in table tennis

Receiving Receiving is when you put the elbow above the table, and close to the ball. Hit the ball right after the first bounce. Hit the ball lower the net height. This is a small detail but very important

End The players exchange ends after each game, and if play consists of more than one game, in the deciding game of the match the players change ends when one player reaches a score of 10 points. • A game is won by the player who first scores 21 points with a 2-point margin.

Expedite system in table tennis The expedite system comes into play when a game goes longer than 10 minutes unless the score in the game is 9 all or 10 - 8. When the expedite system comes in players take it in turn to serve. If the receive in any point returns 13 shots then they automatically win the point.
