Lady Gregory (Isabella augusta persee ) Birth: March 15, 1852 Death: May 22, 1932 Famous Plays: Spreading the News, Hyacinth Halvey , The Jackdaw, The Workhouse Ward.

Summary of the Story: The play opens with the scene of a quay in a sea port town with additional details of posts and chains and a large barrel. Three Irish policemen (sergeant, B and X) enter on stage in the moonlight with the lantern in one the police official’s hand, which means it is night. From their talking and actions it seems that they are looking for a prisoner who has escaped from the jail premises.

CHARACTERS: Major Characters: Sergeant: He is irresponsible but brave policeman. He really seeks acknowledgment. From the beginning to the end, the story talks about his conflict between good and bad .

Major Character: RAGGED MAN: He is intelligent , persuasive and a rebel patriot. From the beginning to the end his personality remains the same. The story emphasizes his ability to deceive the sergeant.

Minor Characters: Policeman B: He is a comic character , characterized by thoughtlessness and foolish questions. But there is also some poetry in his simple soul. Policeman X: Policeman X has only four lines. He is ambivalent about his duty and shares the sergeant’s latent sympathies, and stands for the popular opinion in Ireland .

Theme: The story’s theme centers around the conflicting loyalties of the characters , particularly the sergeant, who is torn between his duty to uphold the law and his sympathy for the oppressed Irish people. Through the interactions of the characters, the story highlights the struggle for Irish independence. The story suggests that the desire for freedom and independence cannot be easily suppressed and that even those who appear to be loyal to the occupying force may secretly support the cause of independence.

Critical Analysis: It delves into themes of duty, justice and individual conscience amidst the backdrop of Ireland’s struggle for independence. It shows a moment of personal growth and moral clarity through the sergeant’s character as he lets the man escape. The story prompts readers to reflect on their own values and beliefs, inviting introspection and empathy.

Literary Devices: Symbolism: The rising moon symbolizes hope and freedom . It illuminates the dark night and guides people towards a better future. Hyperbole: the ragged man has hyperbolic way of speaking, using such exaggerating phrases as, “All the worlds against the poor!” and “Do you want to have me killed?”

Literary Devices: Repetition: The man sometimes repeats the sergeant’s words to evade his questions. As when sergeant asks him where he is going and he replies , “Sure you told me to be going, and I am going.” Irony: It is ironic that the ragged man has actually disguised himself to be a poor man eking out a living singing his patriotic ballads, while the sergeant who had been patriotic at heart as a youth tries to capture the escapee.

Parts of Speech: Noun: sergeant, moon, Ireland Pronoun: he, they Adjective: brave, dark, rebellious Verb: walked, sighed, escaped Preposition: in, on ,under Conjunction: and, but Interjection: oh, ah, alas
