The Scientific Method How can we learn new things?
The Scientific Method It is a process of investigation to find or produce measurable and reliable results that answer a specific question.
Analysis Remember that the scientific method is a complex and flexible process rather than a strict set of steps. Hypothesis Observation The Scientific Method: Process Question Experiment Conclusion
You observe that plants grow in different directions. Observation This is the initial step where a problem is noticed. Observations can be qualitative or quantitative. 1.
“What makes a plant grow in a certain direction?” Question Based on the observations, a question or problem is formulated. It should be specific, measurable, and researchable. 2.
The direction of the plant growth depends on the location of the light source. Hypothesis It is an educated guess or a tentative explanation for the observed phenomenon. It should be testable and falsifiable. 3.
You can set up an experiment using plants. Record your data thoroughly. Experiment This is the stage where we get to test our hypothesis. It can be a test or a series of tests done in a controlled environment to validate our observations and answer our questions. 4.
What worked and did not work during your experiment? Analysis This is when we compare our expected results with our actual results. We gather measurable results that can prove if our hypothesis is true or false. 5.
Do the results of your experiment answer your research question and hypothesis? Conclusion We draw conclusions from our analysis. Our conclusion summarizes the information we gathered during the scientific process and shares if our hypothesis is correct or can be supported. 6.

Laws, Theories, & Hypothesis
Laws, Theories, and Hypothesis Laws -describe consistent patterns or relationships in nature. Theorie s -are well-supported explanations based on evidence and experimentation. Hypothesi s -are initial guesses or ideas to be tested.
