LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the Class, Students will able to know: d efine Research define Nursing Research l ist down the purposes of Research e numerate the Scope of Research discuss the role of Nurse in Scope of Research
INTRODUCTION Research is a process to discover new knowledge. Research can be done with human beings, animals, plants, other organisms and inorganic matter. one of the most important considerations in doing good research is to follow the design or plan that is developed by an experienced researcher. Nurses are Increasingly expected to become producers of new knowledge through nursing research.
DEFINITION OF RESEARCH RESEARCH: Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.
DEFINITION OF NURSING RESEARCH NURSING RESEARCH: Nursing research is systematic inquiry designed to develop knowledge about issues of importance to the nursing profession, including nursing practice, education, administration, and informatics.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH Basic research to extend the base of knowledge in nursing. To formulate or refine a nursing theory. Applied research to find solutions to existing problems. To enhance the immediate utility of Evidence-Base-Practice. To study the effectiveness of a nursing interventions . To discover general principles of human behavior to solve problems in nursing practice.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH To achieve varying level of explanation. To identify, describe, explore, explain and predict and to exert control over the existing health problem situation. To link research findings with Evidence-Base-Practice.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH To develop and rigorously test a new method of measuring patient outcomes. To help nurses make Evidence-Base treatment decisions. To determine the benefits and risks of the newly developed or existing interventions. To assess the cost-effectiveness of nursing interventions. To diagnose, assess patients and to measure important clinical outcomes . To decide resource allocation.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH To design effective interventions. To motivate people to comply with the treatment. To engage in health promotion activities. To study the barriers to positive health practices.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH The scope of a research encompasses a wide scope of scientific inquiry including clinical research, health systems and out comes research, nursing administration research, and Nursing education research.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH CLASSIFICATION:
SCOPE OF RESEARCH RESEARCH IN CLINICAL NURSING PRACTICE: The scope of clinical nursing research may range from examining nursing interventions and experiences for health promotion, illness prevention, and care for individuals, families and communities in diverse settings.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Common areas in clinical nursing practices are given below: Health promotion, maintenance, and disease prevention. Patient safety and quality of health care. Promotion and risk reduction interventions of health. Patient centered care and care coordination.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Promotion of health and well-being of older people. Palliative and end of life care. Development of EBP’s and translation research. Care implication of genetic testing and therapeutics. Home care and community health nursing care practices .
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Treatment compliance and adherence to treatment. Description of holistic nursing situation social, cultural, religious, traditional, and family practices, which have health implications.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH RESEARCH IN NURSING EDUCATION: The scope of nursing education research is to develop and evaluate efficient educational techniques and to find out new methods and theologies, which are efficient in enhancing the learning among nursing students in classroom and clinical settings.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH The common areas of nursing Education are given below: Testing the effectively and efficiency of the old teaching methods/techniques and generating newer effective teaching tools and techniques. Curriculum taught and learning experiences of nursing students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Enhancing the psychometric domain of learning among nursing students in clinical practices. Extent of strict discipline required for the nursing students to improve their learning and education. Promoting clinical and classroom learning among nursing students. Refining and generating evaluation methods to judge the efficiency of the teaching learning process.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Identifying and managing problems of absenteeism and lack of motivation among nursing students. Resolving any issue or phenomenon related to the teaching learning process of the nursing students.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH RESEARCH IN NURSING ADMINITRATION: Administration is one of the domains that need continuous investigation because nurse administrators encounter several issues and problems that requires solution.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH The common examples given below: Assessing existing organizational structure, span of control, communication, staffing pattern, benefits, performance evaluation practice etc developing new knowledge. Developing and testing different administrative models to enhance swift administration employees. Research can be conducted on any phenomenon related to nursing administration.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH RESEARCH IN HEALTH SYSTEMS AND OUTCOMES OF CARE: It is one of the important areas of nursing research, nurse scholars may identify the success of presently existing health care delivery system and to identify the ways and means to develop affordable quality health care to individual, family and communities.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Common examples that requires in the area are given below: Developing models of health care, which are affordable and accessible to people located in remote and hill areas. Developing cost effective model of health care for rural and deprived communities.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH Effective use of information and technology to provide health care services from tertiary care centres and outreach areas. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies and programmes for health care of people such as National rural health mission (NRHM) and National urban health mission (NUHM) etc
ROLE OF NURSE IN RESEARCH The research role of the nurse was traditionally viewed as one carried out only by academicians, nurse scientists, and graduate nursing students. T he research process is also considered to be a responsibility of nurses in clinical practice. The primary task of nursing research is to contribute to the scientific base of nursing practice. Evidence-based practice will be facilitated, with a resultant increase in the quality of patient care.
ROLE OF NURSE IN RESEARCH Nursing will grow and a scientifically based rationale for making changes in nursing practice and patient care will be generated. Nurses who have preparation in research methods can use their research knowledge and skills to initiate and implement timely, relevant studies . Nurses who do not initiate and implement nursing research studies do not play a significant role in nursing research. Every nurse has valuable contributions to make to nursing research and a responsibility to make these contributions.
ROLE OF NURSE IN RESEARCH All nurses must constantly be alert for nursing problems and important issues related to patient care that can serve as a basis for the identification of researchable questions. All nurses must directly involved in patient care are often in the best position to identify potential research problems and questions. Their clinical insights are invaluable. Nurses also have a responsibility to become actively involved in ongoing research studies. This participation may involve facilitating the data collection process, or it may include actual collection of data.
CONCLUSION Nursing research has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice , thus rendering it an essential component of the educational process. Nursing research is critical to the nursing profession and is necessary for continuing advancements that promote optimal nursing care.
