The importance of the relationship between the self and the external world https://youtu.be/iGrTMc_ntas?si=wASUqjYqljQtoLaZ What is the relationship between external reality and the self? WHERE DO I BELONG?

What is the self? In contemporary literature, self is defined as: Separate Self-constrained Independent Consistent Unitary Private

separate Distinct and unique from other self One cannot be other person

Self contained and independent In it self it can exist It doesn’t need other self to exist Self contained with its own thoughts, characteristics and volition

consistent Self’s traits, characteristics are more or less the same

unitary Center of all experiences and thoughts that run through a certain person

private Each person sorts out information, feelings and emotions, and thought processes within the self

Self in society Social constructivist argue that the self should not be seen as static entity that stays constant through and through because self is always subjected to influences here and there. The guiding principles of Social constructivism: Knowledge is constructed through human interaction Individuals create meaning through their interaction

Having different roles is normal, acceptable, and expected. The self is capable of morphing and fitting itself into any circumstances it finds itself in.

The self and the culture According to Marcel Mauss (French Anthropologist) every self has two faces: Personne and Moi PERSONNE has much to do with what it means to live in particular institution, family, religion, nationality, and how to behave given the expectations and influences from others. MOI refers to a person’s sense of who he is, his body, his basic identity, and his biological givenness

How will you identify the PERSONNE and MOI of bob from the previous story?

The Self simply morphed according to the circumstances and contexts Filipinos tend to consider their territory as a part of who they are; “ Tapat mo , linis mo.” Filipinos most probably do not consider national roads as something external to who they are. IT IS PART OF THEM AND THEY ARE PART OF IT However, when he is in the foreign territory where nothing technically belongs to him. He has to follow rules or else be apprehended;

MEAD and VYGOTSKY Human persons develop with use of language acquisition and interaction with others; The way we process information is normally form of an internal dialogue in our head; So cognitive and emotional development of a child is always MICMICRY of how it is done in the social world, in the external reality where he is.

What’s your opinion about this? If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he learns violence. If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty. If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence. If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with security, he learns faith. If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to love the world. But if a child lives with prayer, he learns to love God. (Dorothy Law Nolte)

GENDER AND THE SELF Gender is one those LOCI of the self that is subject to alteration, change, and development; In the past years, we have seen people fought hard for the right to express, validate, and assert their gender expression; Many conservatives may frown upon this and insist on the biological; It is important, point of view of social sciences, to find, express, and live his identity.

GENDER AND THE SELF This forms part of selfhood that one cannot just dismiss; As who he is by taking note of gender identities; Oftentimes, society forces a particular identity unto us depending on our sex/and or gender.
