Chapter 11 Lesson 2 The Structure of Atoms By: Rasha Shawky

What makes up matter? Scientists have come to agree that matter is made up of small particles, called atoms. Atoms are the building blocks of matter.

The basic structure of all atoms is the same . 1- An atom is mostly empty space. 2-At the center of an atom there is Nucleus surrounded by electrons . Nucleus is a small, dense core at the center of an atom .

Nucleus has : 1-A proton is a positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom. 2-Neutrons are particles found in the nucleus, but a neutron has no charge. Nucleus surrounded by: Electrons are negatively charged particles that speed through an area around the nucleus called the electron cloud . https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajg07Dnc1BQ

What are the parts of an atom? Particle Charge Proton Positive + Neutron No charge Electron Negative - https:// www.liveworksheets.com/w/en/science/1522523

Identify the parts of the atom.

What are the parts of an atom? The number of protons and electrons in an atom are the same, so their charges are balanced and the atom has an overall charge of 0.

What are the parts of an atom? An atom can gain or lose electrons to become an ion , which has a net positive or negative charge . An ion is an atom that has a charge because it has lost or gained electrons.

How can we describe atoms? Similar atoms have the same number of protons , but the number of neutrons may differ. Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
