The role of renewable energy in powering agricultural value chain By Abubakar Kantoma Zonal Coordinator Nigeria Agro-Industry and Agri-business development Initiative (NAADI ) Sokoto Zonal Office
Introduction Who is Agripreneur Qualities of A gripreneur Source of nergy to A gripreneur Alternate source of energy to A gripreneur Advantages of renewable energy for agriculture NAADI at glance NAADI interventions Conclusion Q & A
INTRODUCTION According to Prof. Calestous Juma’s of African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) “ 70% of employment in Africa comes from agriculture, so you can argue that, in Africa, agriculture and economy are synonymous’’. Agriculture uses energy directly as fuel, electricity or renewable energy to operate machinery and equipment, to heat or cool buildings, and for lighting on the farm, and indirectly in the fertilizers and chemicals produced off the farm. In the this industrialized days of farming, energy is widely required in all kinds of agricultural value chain, as such its of great importance if a AGRIPRENEUR can look at cheaper sources to power his business
Who is Agripreneur
AGRIPRENEUR AGRIPRENEURS: are a new breed of Young Entrepreneurs combining their love of Farming and Agriculture with an acquired professional Business Approach. ENTREPRENEUR : ENTREPRENEUR is someone who creates something new or add value to the existing product or service and also willing to assume the risk and rewards of his innovation. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a source of new ideas, goods, services and business/or procedures.
QUALITIES OF SUCCESSFUL AGRIPRENEUR 1. Dream big. 2. Passion for positive change 3. Clear vision of what he want to achieve. 4. Engage in calculated risk taking. 5. Self-motivated 6. Results-driven. 7. Strong desire to be independent 8. Know how to sell 9. Powerful drive to accumulate wealth. 10. Embrace fear. 11. See opportunities where others do not. 12. Not afraid of mistakes. 13. Seek out help when needed 14. Good interpersonal skills. 15. Discipline. 16. Focus and flexible 17. Love what they do
SOURCES OF ENERGY TO AGRIPRENEUR Food security and sustainable agriculture are the two main objectives of agriculture production process and these objectives can only be achieved by changing the farming practices from fossil based energy generation to Renewable Energy based farming. Many kinds of renewable energy sources are now becoming cheaper day in day out, particularly in agricultural sector. Some examples of these renewable energies are 1. Solar Photovoltaic : Technology that converts solar light radiations into electrical energy. The electricity generated from Solar PV can be used for running farm machinery, lighting, water pumping in agriculture production process. 2. Solar Thermal: Technology that coverts solar heat radiations into heat energy
3. Wind Power: Wherever wind at the rate of 7 to 9 meter/second exists, wind power can be used to generate electricity by wind turbines 4. Mini and Micro- Hyrdo Power (MHP): Hydro energy can come from the natural flow of water. Amount of energy depends upon the flow and head of the water 5. Mini and Micro- Hyrdo Power (MHP): Hydro energy can come from the natural flow of water. Amount of energy depends upon the flow and head of the water 6. Bio-Energy: Bio-energy is renewable energy made available from materials derived from biological sources. Biomass (wood, corn, cotton sticks, sugarcane, bagasse, soybeans, flowers, agriculture, livestock and municipal waste etc) can be converted into bio-energy from different processes
ADVANTAGES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR AGRICULTURE 1. Cheaper than fossil fuels 2. Sensible solution to drought-related problems 3. Not a permanent switch 4. Potential changes in law 5. Solar energy is currently on the rise 6. Becoming more advanced 7. Solar storage is also becoming more affordable 8. Soil becomes better habitat 9. Most efficient way to halt global warming
OTHER INTERVENTIONS FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR AGRIPRENEURS NAADI: The NAADI which stands for Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro -Industry Development Initiative, was the Initiative of Federal Ministry of Industry, trade and Investment which was put up to drive the transformation Agenda of the federal government. The design of NAADI draws from the frame work by UNIDO under African Agribusiness and Agro -Industry Development Initiative (3ADI) which focus on agro based and agro allied industries and formally adopted for domiciliation in Nigeria as NAADI in collaboration with the Federation of Agricultural Commodities Association of Nigeria (FACAN) as a private body. OBJECTIVE OF NAADI The objective of NAADI is to develop an industrialized and commercialized agricultural sector comprised of highly productive and profitable commodity value chains, towards accelerating the growth and diversification of the economy into differentiated high-value products
NAADI INTERVENTIONS 1. Serve as aggregator that links between cooperatives and off takers. 2. Provide ease of access to loans and grants for cooperatives from our donors. 3. Empowering local fabricators and supporting their activities. 4. Provision of all the training needs of the registered cooperatives. 5. Availing the farmers/processors with relevant information required to access the market within the country, ECOWAS Community and other foreign markets. 6. Changing the mind set of the local farmers from local way of farming to professional Business Approach SCOPE OF NAADI The scope of NAADI is defined in terms of constituent elements and processing industries as follows 1 . Agro based industries such as food and beverages manufacture , textile and garment manufacture, leather and leather products manufacture 2 . Agro-allied industries such as Agricultural Input manufacture, agro machinery manufacture, livestock manufacture.
HOW TO QUALIFY FOR NAADI PROGRAM 1. Individuals with the same interest should form a cooperative with minimum of 10 members and maximum of 20. 2. The cooperative should be registered with state Ministry of Commerce . 3. The cooperative should have bank account with any of the commercial banks in Nigeria 4. The members should then proceed to NAADI office and pick free form and return same to the office after filling it.
