Definition:

Precis writing is the process of summarizing a given passage while retaining its
essential ideas in a concise form. It conveys the main points clearly and effectively
without unnecessary details.

Steps for Writing a Precis
1. Read Carefully: Understand the passage's main theme and key ideas.
2. Identify Key Points: Highlight essential arguments, facts, or details.
3. Eliminate Redundancies: Remove examples, repetitions, and minor details.
4. Use Your Own Words: Write in a precise and coherent manner, avoiding
direct sentences from the passage.
5. Maintain Logical Flow: Ensure clarity and cohesion while summarizing.
6. Preserve the Author’s Tone: Do not alter the intent, tone, or viewpoint of
the original text.
7. Stick to the Word Limit: A precis should be roughly one-third of the original
passage.
Dos for Precis Writing
• Begin with the basic idea of the passage to make the precis convenient to
read.

• Give a clear idea of what the reader is about to read.
• While reading the passage, make a note of all the important points and
include them in the precis.
• Follow the main idea of the passage with the facts/points of improvement/
methods, etc. as mentioned in the comprehension.
• Include all the important keywords and terms that are used in the passage.
• Keep track of the tenses you use. Data related to historical events of the
past must be described in the past tense only.
• There must be a relation between the data you are writing in the precis. It
should have some common links.
Don’ts for Precis Writing
• The length of the precis must be shorter than the length of the passage.
• Do not overcomplicate the precis and use easy vocabulary.
• Do not make assumptions or add information in the precis as per your own
imagination.
• Do not give your own opinion or criticism over the comprehension.
• Avoid using abbreviations.
• Do not enter statements in the question format in the precis.
• Don’t focus on any one point for very long. Keep the information as precise
as possible.

Example 1
Original Passage (150 words):

"Education is the backbone of a nation. It shapes individuals and contributes to
national progress. A well-educated population ensures economic growth, social
harmony, and political stability. However, education must not be limited to
acquiring degrees; it should foster critical thinking, creativity, and ethical values.
Many countries struggle with outdated curricula and a lack of resources, resulting
in poor learning outcomes. Investing in education means investing in the future,
and governments must prioritize funding, infrastructure, and teacher training.
Additionally, technology can play a crucial role in enhancing education through e-
learning and digital classrooms. If education is given the attention it deserves,
societies can overcome challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality."
Precis (50 words):

"Education is essential for national progress, fostering economic growth and social
stability. Beyond degrees, it should promote critical thinking and ethics. Many
nations face educational challenges due to outdated curricula and limited
resources. Governments must invest in education, leveraging technology for better
learning outcomes and addressing issues like poverty and unemployment."

Example 2
Original Passage (120 words):

"Time is a precious resource that should not be wasted. Successful individuals
recognize the value of time and manage it wisely. Procrastination leads to missed
opportunities and regrets. Planning, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining discipline
help in making the most of time. In contrast, those who waste time often struggle
with inefficiency and failure. Time, once lost, cannot be regained, making it crucial
to use every moment productively. Reading, learning new skills, and meaningful
work contribute to personal growth. In today’s fast-paced world, time management
is more critical than ever. Those who master it achieve their goals efficiently, while
others are left behind, wondering where their time went."
Precis (40 words):

"Time is invaluable, and effective management ensures success. Procrastination
causes inefficiency and regret; while planning and discipline enhance productivity.
Using time wisely through learning and meaningful work leads to growth. In a fast-
paced world, mastering time management is crucial for achieving goals."
