McGregor observed there were two diametrically held assumptions that infiltrated management practice. Managers, theorized, display behaviors derived from one or the other set of assumptions. The assumptions were:

This theory assumes that people dislike work, lack of ambition, are irresponsible and resistant to change, prefer to be led Are self centered and does not care about organizational goals. “Theory X”

This theory assumes that people are willing to work; work can be as natural as play and rest, accept responsibility, are capable of self-direction and creativity, The degree of commitment to objectives is in proportion to the size of rewards associated with their achievement! “Theory Y”

Theory X Theory Y Autocratic leadership Team work leadership One way communication with little feedback Two way communication with plenty of feedback Low trust in appraisal High trust Control is rigid and extreme self control Superior sets objectives for subordinates Superior and subordinate set objectives jointly Management processes.
