THERMOGRAPHY
ThermalimagesorThermograms,arevisualdisplaysofthe
amountofinfraredenergyemitted,transmitted,andreflected
byanobject.
Theterm"Thermography"referstocapturingofthermal
patternsanddataemittedbyanobjectwiththeuseofan
infraredimagingandmeasurementcamera.
ThermographiccamerasdetectradiationinIRrangeofthe
electromagneticspectrumandproduceimagesofthat
radiationcalled“hotspots”.
Infraredthermographyisthescienceofacquisitionand
analysisofthermalinformationbyusingnoncontactthermal
imagingdevices.

WHAT IS INFRARED?
4 Infraredlightisnotvisibletothe
nakedeyebecauseinfrared
wavelengthsaretoohighonthe
electromagneticspectrum.
Thewavelengthsarelongerthan
thoseofvisiblelightandshorter
thanthoseofradiowaves.This
partoftheelectromagnetic
spectrumiscontributestoheator
“heatradiation”.
TheamountofIRradiation
emittedbyanobjectincreases
withtemperature,therefore
thermographyallowsonetosee
variationsintemperature.

THERMOGRAPHIC CAMERA
ThermographiccamerasdetectradiationinIR
rangeoftheelectromagneticspectrumand
produceimagesofthatradiationcalled“hot
spots”.

ADVANTAGES
Itisanon-contacttypetechnique.

DISADVANTAGES
Costofinstrumentisrelativelyhigh.
Unabletodetecttheinside(depth)temperatureifthe
medium.
Accuratetemperaturemeasurementsarehinderedby
