DETERMINANTS OF THE EMPLOYABILITY OF SMU FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT GRADUATES AS PERCEIVED BY PROSPECT EMPLOYERS Presented By: Norissa P. Dimmuyog Glendalyn A. Estalilla Aizel Mae O. Pan- oy Westley B. Abluyen Abraham G. Guimary

Everyone has distinct knowledge, skills, and competencies , but not all people can manage to handle and acquire these knowledge, skills, and competencies for all of the jobs available. To have a long term permanent job is to find an appropriate job that best suits one’s knowledge, skills, and competencies. Nowadays, many people are looking for jobs but stay jobless because of lack of knowledge, skills, and expertise that will land them on the jobs they desire. Graduates must develop a set of skills which reflects wider experiences in the institution because skills are essential for employment. Skills refer to the capabilities, competencies or attributes of an individual. Skills are developed when they are integrated across the curriculum and exercised through trainings. Graduate’s employability is often understood as being the same as graduate’s establishment in the employment market after graduation (EUROSTAT, 2009). INTRODUCTION

Employability is not the same as gaining a job, rather it implies the capacity of the graduate to function in a job and be able to move between jobs, thus, remaining employed throughout their life. According to H arvey (2004), employability is not a set of skills but a range of experiences and attributes developed through higher-level learning; thus, employability is not a product but a process of learning. It continues to develop because the graduate, once employed, does not stop learning. INTRODUCTION

The areas in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) major in Financial Management (FM) have enumerated some of the skills, knowledge, and values that FM students should possess. Conducting surveys regarding the perceptions of employers concerning the knowledge, skills, personal values, trainings/seminars and workshops may help undergraduates/new graduates to be employed. And assessing whether such perceptions are influenced by the Higher Education Institutions’ (HEI’s) strategies, whether formal or informal are needed to provide more activities and learning opportunities to students to enhance their employability skills.
