This song written by an American musician and painter
who was the lead singer of bands like ‘Great Society’
and ‘Starship’, is about an acid trip with other
hallucinogens and is also said to be an anti-war song.
It draws inspiration from a popular 1865 children's
fantasy book and shares its name with the book's time-
anxious anthropomorphic character.
In the dreamlike 1960s, encounters with strange
characters mirrored the book's protagonist.
The enigmatic song critiques parents who paradoxically
expose children to drug-centric tales of chemical-
fueled adventures.

afflicted in _____. (such as fits, hallucinations, and strange behaviours)

When the conquistadors first arrived in South America in the 16th
century, they deemed a certain plant native to this place an 'evil
agent of the devil'. However, after realising one key fact, they
decriminalized and taxed it, taking 10% off the value of each crop.
Later when this plant reached Europe, the drug cocaine was
isolated from it.
Cocaine causes a short-lived, intense high that is immediately
followed by intense depression, edginess and a craving for more
of the drug. It also increases the risk of heart attack, stroke,
seizure or respiratory failure. What caused the conquistadors to
shift from their morals and make this crop legal? This is an
example of how authorities capitalise on the vulnerabilities of
the masses for their benefit.
11
Why did the conquistadors
later legalize the plant?

saw the highest number of this particular drug-related overdose
deaths ever recorded in the US, with estimates exceeding 93,000.
