Tourism Promotion Services NCII Wave Six

San Jose had its beginnings in the 14th century when Chinese traders anchored at the shores of Mangarin (derived from the word Mandarin, an official Chinese palace, the remains of which can still be found in the old barrio of Mangarin ), the oldest settlement in the southern portion of Mindoro. HISTORY

When the Spanish took possession of the island in the18th century, the first site of the  presidencia was in sitio of Sinaoga , on the western side of Barrio Sta. Teresa (now part of Magsaysay). A year later, it was transferred to Caminawit

In 1911, Pandurucan , the old name of San Jose, became the seat of the Civil Government with Don German Ramirez as its first appointed leader up to 1915. The town’s name was derived from its patron saint . St. Joseph/ San Jose

On December 15, 1944, during World War II, Ilin Island was the landing site of U.S. forces during the invasion of Mindoro.

During the American reoccupation Bibiano Gaudiel replaced Isabelo Abeleda who regain his position in 1955. From then on, San Jose began to experienced massive population influx due to existence of Philippine Sugar Mill located in Barangay Central

INTRODUCTION San Jose is a standard provincial town, with most people just passing through or using it as a gateway point to Palawan or the magnificient Apo Reef. Stick around though and you’ll see, that this is the kind of place where friendship flows freely. It’s also home to world class diving and an abundance of marine life. People may try and touch your skin here, but with the accompanying look of bewilderment, and eyes that know no malice – it’s hard to get upset. Just smile back and drop some Tagalog, you’ll amazed at the reaction you get.
