SA has nine provinces. Temperate or mild climate, vary across the country. (weather conditions of area, temp, rainfall) Mostly sunny days and cool nights. Most of SA is very dry, east cost has wet summers, while Western Cape has rainfall during winter. Three capital cities: Pretoria (admin), Cape Town (legislative), Bloemfontein (judicial) Eleven official languages- isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi, English, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, isiNdebele, Tshivenda and siSwati. Airports – OR Tambo, Cape Town and Durban International airport. Ports – Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Richards Bay. Intra provincial – Travel within their specific province Inter provincial – Travelling between provinces

North West Capital city – Mafikeng Climate – Small desert area, hot summers with afternoon showers, cold winters with small amounts of rain. Rainfall – Summer Languages – Setswana, Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, Sesotho Gateways – Grobler’s Bridge border post Airports – Mafikeng Harbours – Landlocked

FREE STATE ATTRACTIONS Vredefort Dome (world heritage site) – Bowl shaped crater (hollow on earths surface). Became World Heritage site in 2005. Caused by meteorite (rock from outer space) 300 km wide. Oldest and largest meteorite impact site in the world. You can hike, bike, canoe and rock climb there. Golden Gate Highlands National Park – At the foothills of the Maloti Mountains. Big rock ( Brandwag Rock) where main camp is located. Animals like eland etc (not the big 5) Hiking trails, caves and vulture restaurant. Close to Clarens . Main purpose for tourists visiting this province is to visit family and friends. Popular destination for leisure and holiday, 23,5% of tourists visiting for these reasons.

LIMPOPO ATTRACTIONS Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape - SA’s first kingdom that started 1000 years ago and lasted 400 years. Traded gold and ivory with China, Egypt and India. It is a trading point between Botswana, Zimbabwe and SA. A statue, the gold rhino was left behind. Kruger National Park – One of SA’s major attractions. 2 million hectares in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Paul Kruger established it in 1898. In 1926 some nearby farms joined them. African Ivory Route – Ivory hunters and gold traders started the route. Opened in 1998 and part of 3,6 million hectares. The locals did not like tourism and were involved to boost it. 63,3% of tourists visit family and friends. Limpopo is least popular for shopping and business conferences.

WESTERN CAPE The Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront - Part of the working harbour in Table Bay, Cape Town. Popular because of views, shopping, entertainment, pubs, restaurants, aquarium and hotels. Can see Robben Island and table mountain from there. Robben island (world heritage site)- Prison where Nelson Mandela was held. Before this it was a hospital for mentally ill people and training station for soldiers in World War 2. Seven km from Cape Town. Museum build on it in 1997. The Garden Route – Known for its natural beauty, Outeniqua mountains, long beaches, Tsitsikamma forest. For eco- and adventure tourists as it offers hiking trials, whale & bird watching, surfing etc. Wine routes – One these routes there is wine farms to drink wine. Well –known ones is Stellenbosch, Paarl etc.

The Congo Caves and ostrich farms – In limestone ridge and are about 4km long. People can only see parts of these caves with a tour guide. There is smaller places to crawl in that will make the tour longer. These caves is close to Oudtshoorn . In this city there is a lot of ostriches and farms. Cape Argus Cycle Tour – Cyclists that partake in a cycle race. 109 km long- past through mountains, trees, cliffs and bays. Happens on the second Sunday of March. Klein Karoo National Arts Festival- Celebrates Afrikaans art, culture and music. Choirs from Stellenbosch and Pretoria. Boosts tourism in the area. Tourists visit here as main reason – leisure and holiday and second reason – family and friends.
