TRADITIONAL GAMES OF INDIA

MEANING AND ORIGIN OF TRADITIONAL GAMES Games are very popular throughout the world and everyone i.e. right from the children to adults prefers to participate in them. Various traditional games are part and parcel of Indian tradition. Games have been an important part of Indian culture endlessly right from their origin. India is considered as a place of origin for a number of traditional games which are well-known throughout the world in present time. A number of leading traditional games which had Indian origin are Kanche, K abbadi , Kho-Kho , Gilli Danda , Stapu , Gutte etc . All these games require technical and tactical skills along-with other physiological components like speed, strength, stamina, agility and coordinative abilities.

DEFINITION OF KANCHE These Marble Balls (Kanche) is used for playing tradition Indian game called "GOTI-KANCHA". Big size Marble balls .

KANCHA OR LAKHOTI Lakhoti is a popular traditional game played across the country. It is also known as Kancha , Golli , Goti and Marbles (English). Marbles, which originated in the Harappan Civilization, are used to play the game. The game helps improve concentration.

BENEFITS OF THIS GAME From 3 feet away, the players try to throw their marbles in the hole. Benefits: From motor skills to mathematical skills, this game can benefit a child in numerous ways. It further improves concentration also helps them to socialize .

RULES TO PLAY KANCHE Kanche (Marbles) There is nothing complex about this game and the rules are simple just keep the marbles inside a drawn circle and from a distance try to hit as many marbles as possible in your turn. The number of marbles you hit will be yours and you can continue to hit until you miss your shot.

KABBADI Kabaddi is a popular contact sport in Southern Asia that first originated in Ancient India. It is played across the country and is the official game in the states of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Telangana and Maharashtra. Outside of India it is a popular activity in Iran, is the national game of Bangladesh and is also one of the national sports of Nepal where it is taught in all state schools.

WINNING THE GAMES At the end of the match, the team with the most points is declared the winner. If at the end of the game both teams have the same amount of points, then the game is deemed to be a draw . In 2014 India won Kabaddi world cup Men’s title 11 nations was participated in it. The Kabaddai player Rakesh Kumar, who emerged as the top money earner in a recent auction for a league.

RULES OF KABADDI Each team shall consist of no more than 12 players with only 7 taking to the field at any one time. The duration of the match is two halves of 20 minutes with a half time break of 5 minutes . There are six officials looking after each Kabaddi match. The officials comprise of a referee, a scorer, two assistant scorers and two umpires . Each team will take turns in raiding and defending. Following halftime, the two teams switch sides of the court and the team who defended first in the first half begin the second half by raiding. The game continues in this way until the time is up, the team with the most points at the end of the match is declared the winner.

OBJECT OF THE GAME The overall object of the game is to simply score more points than the opposition team within the allotted time. To do this, each team must attempt to score points by both attacking and defending. When attacking, the offensive team sends across a raider into the opposition’s half who must touch one of more members of the opposition to score a point. When defending, the objective is to capture the raider by wrestling them to the ground or simply by preventing them returning to their own half by the time their breath is up.

PLAYERS & EQUIPMENT Kabaddi is played by two teams that both consist of twelve players each. However, only seven players per team are allowed on the field of play at any one time. The Kabaddi playing surface measures 13m x 10m and is separated into two halves by a white line, one team occupying each half. It can be played on a wide range of surfaces from a dedicated clay court to spare ground where a playing surface has been chalked out .

SCORING Scoring in Kabaddi is relatively simple. Teams score one point for each opponent that they put out of the game .  When attacking, this is done by the raider touching opposition members, putting them out. When defending, it is done by preventing the raider returning to their own half . Bonus points are also available in Kabaddi. The raider can earn an extra point by successfully touching the bonus line in the opposition’s half.

KHO –KHO Kho Kho is a tag game of India. Its origins are as old as Mahabharata, with strategies and tactics likely derived from Mahabharata itself. On the 13th day of the war, the Kaurava Guru Dronacharya planned the unique tactics Chakraviyu a special military defensive strategy breached by the expert warrior Abhimanyu . He died as he had to fight alone against 7 other warriors and he received heavy casualties. His style of fighting reflects the concept of ring play: a defensive tactic in the game .

This game fosters many desirable traits such as sportsmanship, teamwork, loyalty, competitiveness, and self-esteem as well as speed, agility, strategy and quick thinking First ever Kho Kho competition was held in the year 1914. In 1959 first National Championship was held under KKFI was set up in the year 1955 . The Asian Kho Kho Federation was set up in the year 1987 where 3rd SAF Game was held in Calcutta, India .

RULES OF KHO – KHO Two teams face each other in this game (Team A and Team B) The game starts with toss between two team captain. The winning captain decides who will chase Team A or Team B. Both the team consists of 12 players. If Team A won the toss and decides to chase. 9 players from team A enters the playground. All 9 players sit/kneel in the middle of the court facing opposite direction in a straight row. A match consists of two innings of running and chasing turns of 9 minutes.

DEFINITION OF GUTTE To collect the other stones that are on the ground while keeping the stone in the air in the air, the player must spin one stone up into the air.

A player begins by throwing all five stones onto the ground. He throws a stone into the air, picks up a stone from the ground and then catches the first stone with the same hand. He continues picking up each stone in this manner until all five stones are in his hand.

STAPU Stapu is an outdoor game mostly played in India. Its also known as Hopscotch Stapu is a game that everybody can play with any number of players. Stapu is made with boxes and numbers written inside the boxes from number 1 to number 10

ORIGIN There are many other forms of hopscotch played across the globe. In India it is called Stapu or Kit Kit in Hindi,  Nondi / Paandi (Tamil), Thokkudu billa (Telugu) or Kith-Kith, in Spain and some Latin American countries, it is called rayuela , although it may also be known as golosa or charranca .

GILLI DANDA To play the game, one team uses the " danda " to hit one of the tapered ends of the " gilli " with force. This causes the " gilli " to flip through the air. While the " gilli " is airborne, the opposing team's hitter attempts to smack it like one would as if playing cricket. The one who hits the " gilli " the farthest will wins.

INVENTION Gilli Danda (also spelled Gulli-Danda ) also known as Viti Dandu , Kitti-Pul and by other variations, is a sport originating from the Indian subcontinent, played in the rural areas and small towns all over South Asia as well as Cambodia, Iran, Turkey, South Africa, Italy, Poland, and in some Caribbean islands like Cuba.

RULES The rules have not changed that much over the years, however there have been some changes brought in the way the game is being played. The following fundamentals were laid down by the International Lagori Foundation: Each team would have 12 players, with only 6 players on the court for every set.

DIFFERENT NAME Gilli Danda is known by different names in different parts of India. In Tamil, it is known as Kitti Pul , in Bengali as Danguli , in Kannada as Chinni Dandu , in Marathis as Viti Dandu , in Telegu as Gooti Billa  etc.

RECREATION ON PHYSICAL EDUCATION Recreation is an activity of body and mind which gives relief from tension and fatigue. When we continue doing a work or performing an activity regularly and continuously for some hours, it gives us physical and mental fatigue and strain. Recreational activity relieves us of the feeling of fatigue, restores our energy and promotes a sense of joy. Without recreation, life would be dull and miserable.

MEAINING & DEFINITION OF RECREATION Recreation carries different meaning to different individuals and it is applied to great variety of activities . Sometimes the term is applied to activities of young people and adults to differentiate those activities from the play of young children. Recreation has a more comprehensive meaning and it is not restricted to any particular age group and activity. Recreation means to regain lost vigour and get a sense of joy, refreshment and satisfaction. Recreation is life itself, without recreation life is meaningless . The modern age is full of complexities, a man in order to survive has to do lot of physical and mental work, resulting in fatigue .

NEEDS & IMPORTANT When we continue doing a work or performing an activity regularly and continuously for some hours, it gives us physical and mental fatigue and strain. Recreational activity relieves us of the feeling of fatigue, restores our energy and promotes a sense of joy. TYPE OF RECREATION ACTIVITIES Lifestyle > the way youlive your life in an everyday basis, it includes. eating habits, physical activity participation and recreational choice Lifestyle change > the best way of preventing illness and early death. Indoor recreation > when the activity is within the premises of your comfort zone at home or inside a building• Outdoor recreation > when the activity is undertaken in a natural, rural, or open space outside the confines of buildings, usually large land area that is close to nature

GENERAL PRINCIPLE OF RECREATION Every child needs to discover which activities give him personal satisfaction. In these activities he should be helped to develop the essential skills. Several of these activities should be of such a nature that he can keep them up in adult life .  Every man should have certain forms of recreation which require little space and which can be fitted into small fragments of time . Every man should be helped to form the habit of finding pleasure in reading . Most men should know at least a few songs with good music so that they may sing when they feel like it.

AEROBICS AND ZUMBA is an alternative indoor recreational activity with fitness benefit claims . It was accidentally discovered by a Alberto " Beto " Perez, a celebrity fitness trainor of Colombia in the mid 90's . Zumba is a mode of aerobic workout which involves Latin dance movements, while aerobics is basically a planned workout on every part of your body individually.

POINTS TO REMEMBER The Zumba dance started in year 2001 The Aerobic dance workout was invented in the year 1969. 30 -60 minutes is minimum duration to Zumba or Aerobics daily
