Severity of Problem
India –fatality rate 60/10000 motor vehicles is very
high as compared to 5-15 per 10000 in developed
countries.
India -one person dies on road every 12 mins.

“Ambulance –is an organization for rendering first aid”
It is defined as a vehicle for emergency care ,which
provides a driver compartment and patient compartment
,which can accommodate two medical technicians and
two lying patient so positioned ,that at leastone patient
can be given intensive life support during transit.
AMBULANCE

Role and function of ambulance services
Ambulance is an out reaching limb of hospital based
medical services.
To transport the sick and injured as quickly and
comfortable to the hospital
To provide prompt emergency treatment.
Must equipped with all necessary life saving
equipments and trained staff.

Utilization of ambulance
Ambulance is used for transporting
Patients to be admitted
Out-patient or accident or emergency cases to go home
Out-patient attending by the appointment
Discharge inpatients to go home
Patient to be transferred from one hospital to
another.

Classification of Ambulances
Surface ambulance –ambulance ,playing on roads.
Ambulance trains -used for rushing medical relief team to
accident or disaster and evacuation of mass casualties
,railways have accident medical relief van and armed forces
,ambulances trains.
Flying ambulance –airplanes
Helicopter ambulance
Centralized accident and trauma services services

Centralized Accident And Trauma Services
The main objective of CAT services or Emergency
Medical services system (EMSS) ,is to deliver medical
aid to the accident victims as quickly as possible and
rapidly transport the injured to specialized care
facility, so s to give him the needed immediate critical
care & subsequent life support system.

Scale of authorization of ambulance
100-200 bedded hospital -3 ambulances
200-300 bedded hospital –4 ambulances
300 bedded or above -6 ambulances

Manpower Required
Doctors –depends upon the type of emergency ,accident or disaster.
Critical care medicine trained nurses –1/ambulance.
Drivers -4 per ambulance , one for each shift.( Trained in first aid )
Nursing orderly & stretcher bearer-minimum 4 for each ambulance.
( Trained in first aid )
Training of staff –min every 3 months there should be mock rehearsal
or exercise to know the preparedness of staff in case of any emergency.

BP apparatus & stethoscope
Portable suction apparatus
Hand operated bag mask ventilation unit with mask of all sizes.
Oxygen cylinder
Oropharyngeal airways
Mouth of mouth artificial ventilation airways
Portable suction equipment
Universal dressings and sterile gauze packs
Bandages
Burn sheets
Obstetrical kit
Anti poison kit etc.

Separate communication & control room for
ambulances
ambulance must have wireless communication system
