Basic Principle
•Theprimarywindingisconnectedtothesingle–
phaseacsupply,anaccurrentstartsflowing
throughit.

•Theacprimarycurrentproducesan
alternatingflux(Ф)inthecore.
•Mostofthischangingfluxgetslinkedwith
thesecondarywindingthroughthecore.
•Thevaryingfluxwillinducevoltageintothe
secondarywindingaccordingtothe
faraday’slawsofelectromagneticinduction.

•Thereisnoelectricalcontactbetweenthe

primaryandsecondarywindings.

Can the transformer operate on DC?
•Answer:NO
•Thetransformeractiondoesnottakeplace
withadirectcurrentofconstant
magnitude.
•BecausewithaDCprimarycurrent,the
fluxproducedinthecoreisnotalternating
butitisofconstantvalue.
•Asthereisnochangeinthefluxlinkage
withthesecondarywinding,theinduced
emfinthesecondaryiszero.

•IfDCisappliedtotheprimary
thenthereisapossibilityof
transformercoresaturation.
•Ifcoresaturatestheprimarywill
drawexcessivelylargecurrent.
ThereforeapplicationofDC
shouldbeavoided.

Shell Type Transformer
1. The core has only
onewindow.
The core has two
windows.
2. Winding encircles
the core.
Core encirclesthe
windings.
3. Cylindrical
windingsare used.
Sandwich type
windingsare used.
4.Easyto repair. It is not so easy to
repair.
5. Better coolingsince
more surface is
exposed to the
atmosphere.
Cooling is not very
effective.
