western side of the city is mainly occupied by the Monsanto Natural Park, one of the largest urban
parks in the world.

10. Trains and Railway Stations
As there are five railway stations for different destinations, taking train in Lisbon can be a bit
confusing and time consuming as Portuguese trains are rather slow.
Lisbon’s main departure point for international destinations and central/northern Portugal is Santa
Apolónia Station located on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, eastern district of Alfama, on the Tagus
River banks (Can be reached by bus line 46). All the trains that depart from Santa Apolónia Station
stop at Estação Oriente in Expo. High-speed Alfa trains depart for Oporto every day until 8.55 p.m.
The Sud-Expresso to Paris departs daily at 6.00 p.m., while the Lusitânia train to Madrid departs at
10.00 p.m. every day.
Located in Restauradores, Rossio Train Station runs trains to Sintra every 10 minutes. From Cais do
Sodré railway station, Cascais, Estoril, Oerias (every 20 minutes) and Belém (every 10 minutes) can
be reached. To reach to the Cais do Sodré railway station, take metro Cais de Sodré (Green Line) or
bus line 58.
Located in the other side of the River Tagus, Barreiro station runs trains to southern destinations like
Costa Azul (Blue Coast) and Algarve. Station is accessible by the ferries from the Terreiro do Paço,
Praça do Comércio, every 30 minutes. There is also a private railway operator runs services between
Entrecampos station in central Lisbon and Fogueteiro on the south side of the river through passing
the 25 April suspension bridge. Trains to Setúbal depart every half an hour; Évora every 2,5 hours
and Lagos 5,5 hours.
Buses
Carris is the transportation company that runs buses, trams and funiculars in Lisbon for many years.
It is advisable to buy the tickets in advance as they will be MUCH cheaper and more convenient.
Tickets must be stamped in the machine on boarding the machine. If you plan to stay for a
considerable time, better obtaining one tourist pass which would provide unlimited travel by Carris.
Passes can be obtained in the kiosks of Carris in railway and busy metro stations.
Intercity bus station is located on the corner of Av. João Crisóstomo, near to McDonald’s, in a big
beige building in Saldanha (Accessible through yellow line by metro). This is the terminal for all
intercity buses. Fast Rede Expressos buses also depart from this station.
Metro
The most favorable way to get around in Lisbon is, doubtlessly, Metro. Not because it is cheap and
fast but also because metro stations allows one to enjoy its amazing artistic decoration.
Metro trains run every day from 6.00 a.m. until 1.00 a.m., costing a single journey to any station on
the network € 0.80. Combined with Carris, one day pass costs € 3.4. Pass selling offices include;

11. Areeiro, Arroios, Baixa-Chiado, Cais do Sodré, Campo Grande, Colégio Militar/Luz, Entre Campos,
Marquês de Pombal, Pontinha, Restauradores and Oriente metro stations.
Trams
Trams offer a nostalgic trip through ancient neighborhoods such as the Bairro Alto, Alfama with
fascinating views of the city. It is interesting to note that many of them are pre-World War One and
still running. Line 15 departs from Praça da Figueira to Belém and Line 28 passes through the Bairro
Alto, Alfama and other ancient parts of Lisbon.

Taxi
Beige-colored Taxis of Lisbon are available in every corner of the city and offer very reasonable prices
to get around. However, be aware, some taxi drivers - especially those from the airport are badly
reputed and may charge you more than they are supposed to. Starting charge is €3.25 and the
distance is metered from then on. When you suspect you are being over charged, ask taxi driver a
receipt where you will find the taxi driver's name, route, the amount you have been charged and hour.
With this document you can easily file a complaint.
To avoid these unpleasant situations and make sure that you are paying the right price in the taxi, buy
a Taxi Voucher either at the Ask Me tourist office at the airport, Lisboa Welcome Center at Praça do
Comércio or Palace Foz in Restauradores. Available for immediate delivery, this title of transportation
by taxi is prepaid with a guarantee rate from €14.61 to the city centre. You can also buy "Taxi
Vouchers" for transportation for other parts of the city or even the country, for example, a Taxi at
your orders during the day will cost you 146.73€.
Car Hire
Lisbon has some beautiful old streets which are a joy to walk down, but somewhat more of a
challenge if you are using a car.
If you plan to drive around Lisbon whatever you do avoid the peak time rushes otherwise you could
just waste time sitting in traffic. Drive carefully as there are some narrow corners and steep roads.
Generally, Lisbon is quite a compact city.

12. Parking can be tricky in Lisbon and if it says "Estacionamento Proibido" then you are not allowed to
park there. To play safe, always park your car in car parks located in downtown. Compared to other
European cities, parking rates are quite low in Lisbon. The prices start from 1.20 € hourly. If you wish
to book before coming to Lisbon, you could easily get the service car hire Lisbon, from Rhino, which
can be picked up from all the major points including Lisbon Airport, Gare do Oriente and Santa
Apolónia Station. At Santa Apolónia Station, there is also a low-cost car rental option, InterRent, with
prices starting at 6,99€ per day, which you should book very much in advance. At Lisbon international
airport, there are also the firms such as Sixt, Budget, Avis, Hertz and Europcar. The airport is located
7 kilometres from the city centre, but you may find having a car very useful to get to where you wish
to go, particularly when the public transport is not always the best option for out of town places
like Estoril, Cascais and Sintra. Furthermore, having a car will always give you the freedom to explore
more of the city. Please be aware that the speed limit is 120 kilometres per hour on the motorway.
Out of peak hours, it only takes 15 minutes to get to the Lisbon city centre by car.
Aerobus & Aeroshuttle
Carristur’s Aerobus links the airport with the city centre and the main hotels. It runs daily from
7am to 11pm with the departures every 20 minutes. Aerobus service is complemented by
Aeroshuttle, extending the existing network of coverage in order to satisfy the demand of the city
enlargement. The Aeroshuttle service has been created in order to establish a connection between
Parque das Nações, the Airport and the City Center. This service enables also the access to Bus
Terminal at Sete Rios, Bus and Train Terminal at Gare do Oriente and Metro. It operates from 7am to
11pm with the departures every 30 minutes.
The ticket is valid for 24 hours, costs 3,50 € and can be used for both services as well as in the public
transport network of Carris (buses, trams, funiculars). The holders of the ticket can also enjoy a 25%
discount on Carristur’s Hop on Hop of Sightseeing tours leaving from Praça do Comércio.
Airport 24 Hours Taxi Voucher
For those who want to avoid potential problems with dishonesty, however a bit expensive, Lisbon
Tourism Office (Associação de Turismo de Lisboa) located in the Airport arrivals offers pre-paid taxi
rides. Rates varies on a basis of km: € 0,35 per km. An increase of 20% applies to normal fares from
Monday to Friday between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Plus an extra small fee for the luggage.

GARDENS
Ajuda Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Ajuda)
Being the first botanical garden of Portugal, Ajuda Botanical Garden was built in 1768 by the order of
the Pombal Marquis. This garden was used to cultivate and maintain abundant amount of different
species brought during the Portuguese discoveries from all over the world.

Science Faculty Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Faculdade Ciências)
Created in the 19th century to serve the Science Academy is considered one of the most important
botanical gardens in Europe. The Garden houses approximately 2.500 species some of which are
extremely rare with its palm-tree alleyway and a labyrinth of small paved paths.

16. The Orient Museum (Museu do Oriente)
Opened in 2008 in a former warehouse, the Orient Museum mirrors P ortuguese presence in Asia
throughout over five centuries. The Museum exhibits impressive Indo-Portuguese pieces, Indonesian,
Japanese, Chinese ceramics, textiles, furnishings, paintings, and masks.

Puppet Museum (Museu da Marioneta)
It presents a wide collection of traditional puppets from
all around the world in a restored 17th century convent
named the Convento Das Bernardas. Even though the Museum
aims to provide a general view of puppets from all around
the world, it gives a special attention to Portuguese
Puppet Theater. The museum fascinates the visitors
through a great range of masks coming from all over the
world and shadows. Special collections includes: Dolls
(Japanese), Masks (Oriental), Puppets (Oriental), Puppets
(Portuguese), Stage machinery, reconstructions (Baroque),
Teatro Branca-Flor, Teatro do Mestre Gil, Teatro

MONUMENTS

Aqueduct of the Free Waters (Aqueduto das Águas Livres)


Built in the 18th century (1729-1748) by the order of King João V, the aqueduct served to supply
water to the city. It consists of 109 arches across the valley, with the tallest arch being 66 meters.

17. Estrela Basilica (Basílica da Estrela)


Built in late- Baroque style in the 18th century, Estrela Basilica is one of Lisbon’s the most fascinating

Saint George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge)

connection to the jails once located in the Castle can be seen.

Discoveries Monument (Padrão dos descobrimentos)

18. Built on the bank of River Tagus in 1960 to honor the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry
the Navigator. Designed in the shape of a caravel, on which Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama,
Pedro Álvares Cabral - discoverer of Brazil - Fernão Magalhães - who crossed the Pacific in 1520 -, the
writer Camões and many relevant heroes of Portuguese history are shown, the monument offers a
fabulous view from the top. It also owns a multimedia itinerary through the history of Lisbon, as well
as hosts temporary exhibitions and concerts.

National Church of Santa Engrácia (Igreja de Santa Engrácia/Panteão)


Established in a baroque architectural style, this Church is one of the most beautiful churches of
Lisbon. It took such a long time, 284 years, to build the church that it inspired the Portuguese
expression “works of Santa Engracia”(“obras de Santa Engracia”), signifying endless like works of
Santa Engracia. It is a national monument of Portugal since 1910 and the National Pantheon since
1916.

The Church was built in 1147 in order to extent thanks for the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors. In

Fontaine's fables.
