THE BIGGEST TSUNAMI
TEAM #2: Paula, Lineth, Esteban, Diego &
Claret
EVER REGISTRED

Principle of Causality
On July 1958, Alaska experienced the largest
tsunami on record, following a magnitude
7.8 earthquake.
The earthquake caused several rocks to fall,
as well as a large landslide.
The landslide created a mega-tsunami,
with record-breaking waves reaching 524
meters.
The main cause was the lowering of the
land, but the trigger was the earthquake
itself.

Relationship
Principle
It was connected to plate tectonics. Three
ships were in the bay during the event; two
died, demonstrating the interaction
between nature and society. The bay was
shaped like a "T", which helped intensify
the tsunami.

Generality
Principle
If a landslide in a narrow bay can
generate a megatsunami in Alaska,
then in any other region of the world
with similar geographical conditions,
(narrow bays) a similar event can
also occur.

Evolution Principle
Before the 1958 Lituya Bay tsunami, other
tsunamis had occurred in the bay (1854,
1899, 1936).
After that event, the landscape underwent
permanent alterations, such as developing
slopes and redistributed sediments.
Furthermore, there was a shift in the
understanding of tsunamis of non-tectonic
origin, leading to the introduction of the
concept of megatsunami.

Principle of
Localization
The tsunami event occur in Lituya, Alaska. The
principle demonstrates that the tsunami was a
phenomenon defined by the unique conditions of
Lituya Bay.
