Timed Get Up and Go Test(TUG) BY KRUTIKA BHOIR (MPTh 1 st year) For BPTh 4 rd Year
OBJECTIVES Recap of balance Time up and go test
Recap of Balance Balance is the condition in which all the forces acting on the body are balanced such that the centre of mass (COM) is within the stability limits, the boundaries of the base of support (BOS)
As age increases, so does the risk of developing a condition that will lead to enhanced degeneration of neural and/or musculoskeletal systems. Elderly patients are often less physically active. This inactivity leads to muscular weakness. The muscles also fatigue more quickly, which puts the individual at risk for postural imbalance.
Description: Simple to perform Little equipments Quick measure of dynamic and functional mobility. Correlates to balance and fall risk It is gait speed test used to assess a persons mobility and requires both static and dynamic balance.
Equipment: Stopwatch, Standard Chair, Measured distance of 3 meters (10 feet)
How to perform the TUG Begin test with subject sitting correctly in chair with arm rests Subject is allowed to use arm rest of chair Place a piece of tape on floor 3 mt away from chair Follow therapist commands
Therapist Instructions: Start timing on the word “GO” and stop timing when the subject is seated again correctly in the chair with their back resting on the back of the chair. Wears Regular footwear, May use any gait aid that they normally use during ambulation, No assistance by another person. There is no Time limit. They may stop and rest (but not sit down) if they need to.
INTERPRETATION Scoring (in seconds) implications Less than 10 seconds—independent (IND) 10 to 20 seconds—IND with transfers, stairs, and outdoors 20 to 29 seconds—variable balance, gait speed and functional capacity ≥30 seconds—needs help with chair, toilet transfer, and stairs
Pros simple, inexpensive to perform can compare with other tools and some functional task data Cons not extensively tested and limited data on change sensitivity
SUMMARY TUG test is a simple test use to assess a person's mobility & it required both static and dynamic balance. Test is use frequently in elderly population. It is easy to administer and can generally be completed by most older adults. Test is corelates to balance and fall risk. Residential status and physically mobility status have been determined to significant predictor of TUG performance.
