OBJECTIVES: Identify behaviors considered annoying in Filipino culture and explore the reasons behind them. Interpret on personal experiences and perspectives to better understand why certain actions may be perceived as annoying Filipino values. Formulate strategies on how to overcome or adjust actions accordingly to promote Filipino nation as a whole.

ANNA (American visiting Philippines) CARLA (Local Filipino) Ben (sales representative) -Anna picks up a locally made handbag, examining its craftsmanship. Anna: Look at this bag, guys! Handcrafted by local artist. Isn’t it beautiful? Carla: It’s locally made and its badoy ! Dah!
Ben: But by buying local, you’re not just getting a product; you’re supporting our economy and preserving our culture. Anna: I’m curious. Why do Filipinos seem to prefer imported goods over locally made products?

Colonial Mentality Reason: One of the most significant flaws we have as a nation is our colonial mentality, a preference for all things foreign over our own, a negative trait we acquired from our days under the Spanish and the Americans. As a result, we Filipinos have been imbued with the misconception that our culture is inferior to our past colonizers.

8. Balikbayan Box Mentality Reason: Love of our family. I t becomes a different matter when said family and friends misconstrue or abuse the OFW’s generosity . This has become known as the “ Balikbayan box mentality” in local parlance . Some also believe the practice undoubtedly contributes to the Filipinos’ colonial mentality.

9. Bahala Na Attitude REASON: Filipinos are being Religious. Roughly translated as “come what may,” Filipinos’ version of fatalism is the belief in leaving everything to the hands of fate. T his attitude is still a double-edged sword. On the one hand, positive aspects of this behavior include belief in Divine Providence and national social responsibility. On the other hand, the attitude can also promote a sense of helplessness and resignation of one’s fate at the local level and a countrywide lack of empathy and collective action on the national level.

We need to make sure we maximize our funds while minimizing our expenses. Alex: (excitedly) I found a vendor who can provide us with materials at a fraction of the cost. Corruption Reason: “ culture of corruption” is embedded deep within our system and reinforced by a complex web of economic and social factors, which include personal ambitions and a twisted sense of loyalty to friends and kin. The Philippines is in for a long haul if our officials and we do not eliminate this harmful habit.
In a living room with a couple: Sarah and Mike. Sarah: Mike, I need to talk to you about something that’s been bothering me. Mike: Sure, what’s on your mind? Sarah: I found out that you’ve been texting another woman, and it’s making me question our relationship. The texts are intimate, and it feels like emotional betrayal. Mike : Oh, Sarah, men and women can be friends without it meaning. You’re blowing this out of proportion.
Sarah : But would you feel the same way if were texting another man, sharing personal details and secrets with him? Mike: Well, no, I wouldn’t be comfortable with that. It’s different for women. Sarah: Exactly, Mike! Why is it acceptable for you to have close relationships with other women, but not for me to have the same with men?
11. Maintaining Double Standards
Maintaining Double Standards REASON: Filipinos are hypocrites to the core. This behavior can be observed in just about every sector of Philippine society.
12. Excessive Partying
Now there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a fiesta and party now and then; it’s just that we Filipinos tend to overdo it. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and even sad funerals are celebrated by Filipinos like there is no tomorrow. Sometimes we even make up the slightest of reasons so that we can have an excuse to party. Moreover, a host would sometimes even strain his finances to impress his guests . As for fiestas, every LGU down to the smallest barangay in the country has a fiesta to celebrate. As we said, it’s alright to party, but we should focus on austerity and working hard first.
